David Wilkie (footballer)
David James Wilkie (27 June 1914 – 9 August 2011) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL). After gaining attention as a 17 year old player by kicking 80 goals with Bacchus Marsh in 1932 in the Geelong & District Football League, Wilkie trialled with Melbourne at the start of the 1933 VFL season. Despite scoring 30 goals in four practice games, he moved to Melton in June that year without playing a senior game. Later that same season he moved again, this time to Castlemaine. Wilkie joined Essendon at the start of the 1934 season, scoring three goals in his only senior appearance, as Essendon were defeated heavily by South Melbourne with Bob Pratt scoring 15 goals. After a few weeks in Essendon's reserve team he moved to Fitzroy, briefly playing for their reserve team before returning to Castlemaine in the middle of the year. Bacchus Marsh Football Club
Bacchus Marsh Football and Netball Club is an Australian rules football and netball club, located in Bacchus Marsh in Victoria, Australia. The football squad competes in the Ballarat Football League, which is part of the Victorian Country Football League. The home ground of Bacchus Marsh is Maddingley Park, located to the south of Bacchus Marsh. History The club was originally two clubs: the Bacchus Marsh Tigers who wore a black guernsey with a yellow strip going diagonally from top left to bottom right, and the Maddingley Spiders who wore a black guernsey with a red strip going diagonally from top left to bottom right. In 1978 Maddingley left the Ballarat-Bacchus Marsh FL and joined the Ballarat Football League. Bacchus Marsh remained in the B-BMFL and struggled because the club was practically insolvent. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). During general play, players may position themselves anywhere on the field and use any part of their bodies to move the ball. The primary methods are kicking, handballing and running with the ball. There are rules on how the ball can be handled; for example, players running with the ball must intermittently bounce or touch it on the ground. Essendon Football Club
The Essendon Football Club, nicknamed the Bombers, is a professional Australian rules football club. The club plays in the Australian Football League (AFL), the game's premier competition. The club was formed by the McCracken family in their Ascot Vale, Victoria, Ascot Vale home "Alisa", and while the exact date is unknown, it is generally accepted to have been in 1872. The club’s first recorded game took place on 7 June 1873 against a Carlton Second 20. From 1878 until 1896, the club played in the Victorian Football Association then joined seven other clubs in October 1896 to form the breakaway Victorian Football League (later changed to AFL in 1990). The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. Originally known as the Victorian Football League (VFL), it was founded in 1896 as a breakaway competition from the Victorian Football Association (VFA), with its inaugural season commencing the following year. The VFL, aiming to become a national competition, began expanding beyond Victoria to other Australian states in the 1980s, and changed its name to the AFL in 1990. The Geelong & District Football League (GDFNL) is an Australian rules football and netball league in Victoria (Australia), Victoria, being the oldest surviving competition in the region. It is one of three leagues in the Geelong area, the others being the Geelong Football League, Geelong FNL and the Bellarine Football League, Bellarine FNL. There are 12 teams competing in the GDFL, which has also produced over 600 Australian Football League, VFL/AFL players. Bob Pratt
Harold Robert Pratt Sr. (31 August 1912 – 6 January 2001) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the South Melbourne Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and the Coburg Football Club in the Victorian Football Association (VFA). Considered "arguably the best full-forward in the history of Australian rules", Pratt was one of the inaugural Legends inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 1996. Known for spectacular diving and high-flying marks, Pratt topped South Melbourne's goalkicking for the first time in 1932 with 71 goals and for the next three seasons passed 100 goals. His total of 150 goals in 1934 was a VFL/AFL record which stood alone until Peter Hudson equalled it in 1971. Pratt also kicked ten or more goals in a game eight times, including 15 goals in a single game. His son, Bob Pratt Jr., also played for South Melbourne.
