David Symon
David Culross Symon (12 March 1858 – 21 March 1924) was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1890 to 1892, representing the seat of South Fremantle. He was born in Scotland, lived in Australia from 1881 to 1892, and then spent the rest of his life in England. Symon was born in Stirling, Scotland, to Elizabeth (née Sutherland) and James Symon. His brother, Sir Josiah Symon, was the fourth Attorney-General for Australia. Symon arrived in the Colony of Western Australia in 1881, settling in Fremantle. He initially worked for Harrold Brothers, but later had his own firm, Symon, Hammond, & Hubble. Western Australian Legislative Assembly
The Western Australian Legislative Assembly, or lower house, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of Western Australia, an Australian state. The Parliament sits in Parliament House in the Western Australian capital, Perth. The Legislative Assembly today has 59 members, elected for four-year terms from single-member electoral districts. Members are elected using the preferential voting system. As with all other Australian states and territories, voting is compulsory for all Australian citizens over the legal voting age of 18. Role and operation Most legislation in Western Australia is initiated in the Legislative Assembly. Daniel Keen Congdon
Daniel Keen Congdon (August 1836 17 January 1907) was the mayor of the Municipality of Fremantle in Western Australia from 1886 to 1888. Biography Daniel Keen Congdon was born in August 1836 in Chatham, Kent to William John (18011865) and Sarah Ann née Scott (19061859). Congdon migrated to Western Australia with his parents from Kent in 1853. His father was a pharmacist and worked for the Western Australian Penal Department. On 22 December 1861 he married Jane Ainslie née Fairbairn. They had thirteen children (eight boys and five girls). In 1885 he was elected the mayor of the Municipality of Fremantle, a position in which he served for three years. He was re-elected as mayor in 1891. He was subsequently elected unanimously as the inaugural mayor of North Fremantle. He was a member of the Western Australian Legislative Council from 1892 to 1900. This is a list of members of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly between the 1890 elections and the 1894 elections, known as the First Parliament. They held office under the '' Constitution Act 1889'', which was given royal assent by Queen Victoria on 15 August 1890 and took effect on 21 October 1890 with a proclamation by the new Governor of Western Australia, Sir William Robinson. The ''Daily News'', historically a successor of ''The Inquirer'' and ''The Inquirer and Commercial News'', was an afternoon daily English language newspaper published in Perth, Western Australia, from 1882 to 1990, though its origin is traceable from 1840.
