David Samuel, 3rd Viscount Samuel
David Herbert Samuel, 3rd Viscount Samuel OBE ( he, דוד הרברט סמואל; 8 July 1922 – 7 October 2014) was an Anglo-Israeli chemist and neurobiologist. Samuel was the son of Edwin Samuel, 2nd Viscount Samuel, and the grandson of the British-Jewish diplomat Herbert Samuel, 1st Viscount Samuel. He was a second cousin of Rosalind Franklin. He was educated at Balliol College, Oxford, and served in the Royal Artillery in the Second World War in India, Burma and Sumatra, reaching the rank of captain. He then commenced a distinguished academic career, and was one of the founding fathers of the faculty of chemistry at the Weizmann Institute of Science. Late in his career, his scientific interests moved from physical chemistry (particularly chemical kinetics) to neurobiology. Order Of The British Empire
The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. It was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V and comprises five classes across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a knight if male or dame if female. There is also the related British Empire Medal, whose recipients are affiliated with, but not members of, the order. Dan Judah Samuel, 4th Viscount Samuel (25 March 1925 – 7 November 2014) was a British-Israeli businessman and peer. Biography Samuel was the son of Hadassah Goor and Edwin Samuel, 2nd Viscount Samuel, the grandson of the British-Jewish diplomat Herbert Samuel, 1st Viscount Samuel, and the younger brother of David Samuel, 3rd Viscount Samuel. He was a second cousin of chemist Rosalind Franklin. He fought in the Second World War, before fighting for Israel in 1948. He was a senior executive for the Royal Dutch Shell group for more than 30 years. From 1957 until 1977 he was married to Esther "Nonni" Gordon, who is from Johannesburg, South Africa.
