David Octavius Hill Medal
The David Octavius Hill Medal is a prize in photography established in 1955, by the Deutsche Fotografische Akademie. It is named in honor of the Scottish artist David Octavius Hill, famous for his Hill & Adamson calotypes, most of which were developed at Adamson's studio, the "Rock House", on Calton Hill in Edinburgh. Allan Porter
Allan Porter (April 29, 1934 – October 2, 2022) was an American-Swiss photographer, journalist, editor, designer, and art director best known for his role as editor of Camera (magazine), Camera magazine. His eye for talent helped launch the career of many now-renowned photographers, namely Josef Koudelka, Stephen Shore, and Sarah Moon amongst many others. Early life and education Allan Porter was the elder of three brothers born to parents of Russian-Jewish ancestry living in Philadelphia. After attending Stokely Elementary School then Blaine Junior High School, Porter's father wanted him to prepare for a business education, but one of his earliest hobbies, collecting 19th-century circus posters, already showed a propensity for art and graphic design. Stefan Moses
Stefan Moses (29 August 1928 – 3 February 2018) was a German photographer living in Munich. Life Born in Legnica, Province of Lower Silesia, Moses was forced to leave school in 1943 because of his Jewish heritage and survived a forced labour camp. After training as a photographer in Wrocław shortly after the end of World War II, he worked as a theatre photographer at the Deutsches Nationaltheater und Staatskapelle Weimar. From 1950, he lived in Munich, where he first became known for his reportages for the ''Stern (magazine), Stern''. His documentary portraits of people and professions in West Germany ''(Germans)'' and later in East Germany ''(Farewell and Beginnings)'' made him accessible to a large audience. John Hilliard, (born 1945) is an English conceptual artist. Hilliard's ongoing body of work addresses the specificity of photography as a medium: its uncertainty as a representational device and its status within the visual arts, especially in relation to painting, cinema and commercial photography. Education Born in Lancaster, Hilliard studied at Lancaster College of Art from 1962 to 1964, and then at Saint Martin's School of Art, London, until 1967. Robert Häusser
Robert Häusser (8 November 1924 – 5 August 2013) was a German photographer. Häusser's career as a photographer began in post-war Germany during his time working on a farm. Consequentially many of his first studies included farm landscapes and workers. After moving to Mannheim he entered into what art historians have dubbed his "light period" (1953–54) due to the "light, often poetic" nature of many of his photographs taken during this time. He exhibited at more than 50 one-man-shows in museums and art galleries in Germany, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Russia, Slovenia, and the USA. He received the Hasselblad Award in 1995. Helmut Gernsheim
Helmut Erich Robert Kuno Gernsheim (1 March 1913 – 20 July 1995) was a historian of photography, a collector and a photographer. Early life and education Born in Munich, Germany, he was the third son of the academic librarian Karl Gernsheim and his wife Hermine Scholz. He studied art history at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. He took up photography in 1934 at the urging of his brother, :de:Walter Gernsheim, who thought it a more practical profession for someone from a partially Jewish background who intended to leave Nazi Germany. Peter Keetman
Peter Keetman (April 27, 1916 – March 8, 2005) was a German photographer. Life and career Peter Keetman was born in 1916 in Elberfeld. He was part of a very wealthy family and his father Alfred Keetman was bank director of the banking house J. Wichelhaus P. Sohn. Peter Keetman lived with his wife Esa in Prien, Breitbrunn and Marquartstein in Chiemgau (Upper Bavaria). From 1935 to 1937 Keetman attended the Bayerische Staatslehranstalt für Lichtbildwesen (later called: Staatliche Fachakademie für Fotodesign Münch]). After graduating he became assistant to industrial and portrait photographer Gertrud Hesse in Duisburg and to industrial photographer Carl Heinz Schmeck in Aachen. Heinz Hajek-Halke
Heinz Hajek-Halke (1898–1983) was a German experimental photographer and educator who co-founded the Fotoform group with Otto Steinert. Life and work Heinz Hajek-Halke, born in Berlin, Germany in 1898, the son of Paul Halke. He spent part of his childhood in Argentina. He started to study graphics in Berlin in 1915, served as a soldier in 1916 in World War I, and then continued his studies after that.
