David Nuuhiwa
David Kealohalani Nuuhiwa III (more commonly known as David Nuuhiwa) is a Hawaiian surfer. Life Nuuhiwa was born in 1948 in Honolulu, Hawaii, the son of a Waikiki beachboy and martial arts instructor, and began surfing at age five, one year after his mother died. He moved to California in 1961 with his father David Nuuhiwa II. David Nuuhiwa is widely known for his soulful noseriding. Often perched at the tip of his board for 20 seconds or more. Nuuhiwa's smooth and fluid style established him winning the May 10th 1966 international championship in San Diego. Nuuhiwa continued to win contests following the shortboard era, such as the 1971 U.S. Surfing Championships. By this time Nuuhiwa had transitioned from his longboards to shortboards, favoring twin-fin fishes. Noseriding
Noseriding is the art of maneuvering a surfboard from the front end. Noseriding is one of the most accomplished maneuvers in surfing. Some advanced maneuvers include: Hang ten toes, Hang five toes, Stretch-five, Front Foot/heel hang, Back Foot/heel hang. Noseriding is a functional maneuver best performed on waves around head high or less in size. Noseriding is performed mainly on noserider style surfboards, which are generally or more in length, with larger surface area and higher water displacement to provide a more stable walking surface. ''Five Summer Stories'' is a 1972 surf film by Jim Freeman and Greg MacGillivray of MacGillivray Freeman Films. The last film of the genre by the duo, it explores the joy of surfing amid the backdrop of 1970s political and environmental problems. Its stars include David Nuuhiwa, Eddie Aikau, Gerry Lopez, and Sam Hawk. The film's backstory dates two years prior, when MacGillivray and Freeman decided they will end their surf filmmaking career, and conceived ''Five Summer Stories'' as their closure for the surfing community. The film was cinematographed by Bud Browne, with principal photography occurring for months in Hawaii. Editing included the creation of animation by John Lamb, who was among the first to animate surfing and skateboarding. Rainbow Bridge (film)
''Rainbow Bridge'' is a 1971 film directed by Chuck Wein centering on the late 1960s counterculture on the Hawaiian island of Maui. Filmed in summer 1970 with non-professional actors and without a script, it features largely improvised scenes with a variety of characters. To bolster the film, producer Michael Jeffery brought in his client Jimi Hendrix to film an outdoor concert. Hendrix's heavily edited (no complete songs) performance appears near the end of the film. ''Rainbow Bridge'' was a critical failure and has been re-released on video tape and DVD formats. Although it only contains 17 minutes of Hendrix performing, it continues to attract attention as his second-to-last American concert and the last one filmed. Donald Takayama
Donald Moke Takayama (November 16, 1943 – October 22, 2012) was an American professional surfer and surfboard shaper. Originally a longboard surfer, Takayama won the Master's division of the United States Surfing Champions in 1971, 1972 and 1973. Hawaiian born, Takayama learned to surf at Waikiki Beach and moved to California in the mid-1950s. Takayama died of complications from heart surgery; he is survived by his wife and four daughters. Early life and childhood Takayama started surfing during his kindergarten year at Waikiki Beach on the south shore of Oʻahu, Hawaii. At 45 pounds, his 95-pound redwood surfboard was too heavy to carry home. Takayama decided he would have to keep his surfboard at the beach, so he buried it in the sand for safe keeping.
