David Morgan Evans
David Morgan Evans (21 April 1911 – 24 May 1941) was a Welsh rugby union, and professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1930s. He played club level rugby union (RU) for Glynneath RFC and Neath RFC, as a forward, and representative level rugby league (RL) for Wales ( Heritage № 156), and at club level for Huddersfield, as a , i.e. number 8 or 10, during the era of contested scrums. Background David Evans was born in Glynneath, Wales, he joined the Royal Navy as a stoker 2nd Class during World War II, and died aged 30 in the Denmark Strait, between Iceland and Greenland, when HMS Hood was sunk in the Battle of the Denmark Strait by the German battleship Bismarck on Saturday 24 May 1941. Glynneath
Glynneath ( cy, Glyn-nedd "valley of the River Neath"), also spelt ''Glyn-neath'' and ''Glyn Neath'', is a small town, community and electoral ward lying on the River Neath in the county borough of Neath Port Talbot, Wales. It was formerly in the historic county of Glamorgan. Glynneath ward covers only part of the community, with some 840 electors included in the neighbouring ward of Blaengwrach. Industrialisation reached Glynneath when coal mining started in 1793, and rapidly expanded when the Neath Canal came to the village in 1775. Many features of the old canal still survive to the present time. The 1938–39 Rugby Football League season was the 44th season of rugby league football. Season summary Salford won their fourth Championship when they defeated Castleford 8–6 in the play-off final. Historically, English rugby league clubs competed for the Lancashire Cup and the Yorkshire Cup, known collectively as the county cups. The leading rugby clubs in Yorkshire had played in a cup competition (affectionately known as ''t’owd tin pot'') for several years prior to the schism of 1895. However, the Lancashire authorities had refused to sanction a similar tournament, fearing it would lead to professionalism. After the split, the replacement for the Yorkshire Cup was not immediately introduced; however, new Yorkshire and Lancashire Cups were introduced in the 1905–06 season. The county cups were played on the same basis as the Challenge Cup, with an open draw and straight knock-out matches leading to a final. RFL Yorkshire Cup
The RFL Yorkshire Cup is a rugby league county cup competition for teams in Yorkshire. Starting in 1905 the competition ran, with the exception of 1915 to 1918, until the 1992–93 season, when it folded due to fixture congestion. In 2019, the competition was relaunched as a pre-season tournament, but not all Yorkshire clubs were invited, hence it is not a legitimate running of the competition, and was not played for ahead of the 2020 season. The competition was open to all senior member clubs of the Rugby Football League in Yorkshire and was normally played in the opening months of the season. Taff Vale Park
Taff Vale Park is a rugby union ground and former greyhound racing track in Treforest, Pontypridd, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales. Taff Vale Park is situated on the River Taff at the end of Nile Street in Treforest. It was originally fields adjacent to the Taff Vale Iron Works and was used by Pontypridd RFC who developed the site into a rugby ground playing there from the 1890–91 season until 1901 and again in 1907–08. It was then used by schools between 1900 and 1927 after being purchased by the Pontypridd Urban District Council Education Committee. Greyhound racing began in 1927 after the ground was sub-let to a greyhound company by the Athletic Club.
