David Melville (academic)
Sir David Melville, (born 4 April 1944) is a British physicist, academic, academic administrator, and public servant. He was Vice-Chancellor of Middlesex University from 1991 to 1996, Chief executive of the Further Education Funding Council for England from 1996 to 2001, and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kent from 2001 to 2007. Early life and education Melville was born on 4 April 1944 in Gateshead, Durham, England. He was educated at Clitheroe Royal Grammar School, then an all-boys grammar school in Clitheroe, Lancashire. He studied physics at the University of Sheffield, graduating with a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in 1965; he was the first of his family to attend university. Having been awarded a NASA scholarship, he studied for a year at Columbia University in New York City, United States, and graduated with a graduate diploma in space physics. David Melville, 3rd Earl Of Leven
David Melville, later Leslie, 3rd Earl of Leven and ''de jure'' 2nd Earl of Melville (5 May 16606 June 1728) was a Scottish aristocrat, politician, and soldier. The third son of George Melville, 1st Earl of Melville and his second wife Catherine Leslie-Melville, he shared the Whig political and the Presbyterian religious sympathies of his father. In 1681, with the death of the rival claimant, John Leslie, 1st Duke of Rothes, he was permitted to enter into the Earldom of Leven. In 1683 Leven and his father were suspected of complicity in the Rye House Plot, a Whig conspiracy to assassinate Charles II and his brother James, Duke of York. To escape arrest they fled to the Netherlands where they joined the band of British Protestant exiles at the court of Prince William of Orange. David Melville (inventor)
David Melville (March 21, 1773 - September 3, 1856) was an American inventor, credited with the first gas street lighting in America, and the first American patent for gas lighting. Melville was born in Newport, Rhode Island to David and Mary (West) Melville. He was apparently able to light both his house and his street with gas by 1805-1806, using hydrogenous gas made by burning coal and wood. In 1876 the American Gas Light Journal stated that "in 1806 he had so far succeeded that he was enabled to light more than twenty rooms on his premises; by means of a large lantern he lighted Pelham street as it had never been lighted before." In 1916, Walton Clark stated: :The first recorded instance of the use of gas for domestic illumination in the United States fixes the date at 1806. David Melville, DD (5 February 1813 – 8 March 1904) was a Church of England priest and university administrator. Educated initially at Shrewsbury School, he was subsequently awarded a scholarship to Brasenose College, Oxford, where after graduating he was ordained as a clergyman. He became a University don, and one of his scholars was William Ward, 1st Earl of Dudley. In 1846 he left Oxford and moved to Durham where he founded Bishop Hatfield's Hall. He was Canon of Worcester Cathedral until he resigned in late 1902.
