David McCarthy (politician)
David McCarthy (1925 –14 July 1973) was a unionist politician in Northern Ireland. Born in Belfast, McCarthy studied at the Belfast Municipal College of Technology before working as a quantity surveyor. He was elected to Ballymena Borough Council for the Ulster Unionist Party in 1965, serving until 1973. By 1970, he was the manager of a building firm, and became the Chairman of the Ballymena Chamber of Commerce. In 1972, he was elected Chairman of the Mid Antrim Unionist Association, and, the following year, he was appointed as President of Ballymena United F.C. At the 1973 Northern Ireland Assembly election, he was elected in North Antrim. He went on holiday immediately after the election, and was killed in a car crash. Four of his five children were in the car at the time it crashed along with his wife Daphne, all sustained injuries but none too serious. Unionist (Ireland)
Unionism is a political tradition on the island of Ireland that favours political union with Great Britain and professes loyalty to the British Crown and constitution. As the overwhelming sentiment of Ireland's Protestant minority, following Catholic Emancipation (1829) unionism mobilised to keep Ireland part of the United Kingdom and to defeat the efforts of Irish nationalists to restore a separate Irish parliament. North Antrim (Assembly Constituency)
North Antrim (, Ulster Scots: ''North Anthrim'') is a constituency in the Northern Ireland Assembly. The seat was first used for a Northern Ireland-only election for the Northern Ireland Assembly, 1973. It usually shares boundaries with the North Antrim UK Parliament constituency, however the boundaries of the two constituencies were slightly different from 1983 to 1986 as the Assembly boundaries had not caught up with Parliamentary boundary changes. In 1996 members of the Northern Ireland Forum were elected from the newly drawn Parliamentary constituencies but the 51st Parliament of the United Kingdom, elected in 1992 under the 1983–95 constituency boundaries, was still in session. The Northern Ireland Assembly was a legislative assembly set up by the Government of the United Kingdom on 3 May 1973 to restore devolved government to Northern Ireland with the power-sharing Northern Ireland Executive made up of unionists and nationalists. It was abolished by the Northern Ireland Act 1974. History Elections were held on 28 June 1973. The Northern Ireland Constitution Act 1973, which received the Royal Assent on 18 July 1973, abolished the suspended Parliament of Northern Ireland and the post of Governor and made provision for a devolved administration consisting of an Executive chosen by the Assembly. 108 members were elected by Single Transferable Vote from Northern Ireland's 18 Westminster constituencies, with 5 to 8 seats for each depending on its population. Democratic Unionist Party
The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) is a unionist, loyalist, and national conservative political party in Northern Ireland. It was founded in 1971 during the Troubles by Ian Paisley, who led the party for the next 37 years. Currently led by Jeffrey Donaldson, it is the second largest party in the Northern Ireland Assembly, and is the fifth-largest party in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom. The party has been described as right-wing and socially conservative, being anti-abortion and opposing same-sex marriage. The DUP sees itself as defending Britishness and Ulster Protestant culture against Irish nationalism and Irish republicanism; the party is Eurosceptic and supported Brexit. It supports Northern Ireland remaining in the United Kingdom and opposes the unification of Ireland. Clifford Smyth
Clifford Smyth (born 1944) is a historian and former politician in Northern Ireland. Smyth stood for the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) in North Antrim in the 1973 Northern Ireland Assembly election, narrowly missing out on a seat. Following the death of David McCarthy, an Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) MPA, he easily won a by-election for a seat on the Assembly. He also became the secretary of the United Ulster Unionist Council. Smyth was elected to the Northern Ireland Constitutional Convention, again in North Antrim, in 1975. He was expelled from the DUP, however, in 1976, after he was accused of passing information to the then Secretary of State Merlyn Rees' office. He joined the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) and stood unsuccessfully as its candidate for the Westminster seat of North Down at the 1979 general election.
