David M. Bressler
David Maurice Bressler (May 1, 1879 – December 16, 1942) was a German-born Jewish American social worker from New York. Early life and education Bressler was born in Charlottenburg, Germany on May 1, 1879, the son of Julius Bressler and Sarah Rothenberg. Bressler immigrated to America in 1884. He attended the College of the City of New York, the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, and the New York Law School. Career He was admitted to the bar in 1901, although he then began working in social welfare and in that same year he became director of the Roumanian Relief Committee, which was organized to help Romanian immigrants. When the Committee later merged with the Industrial Removal Office, he served as the Office's manager until 1917. He was honorary secretary of the Jewish Immigrants Information Bureau early in his career, and in 1910 he was on a committee for the reform of immigration conditions at Ellis Island. Charlottenburg
Charlottenburg () is a Boroughs and localities of Berlin, locality of Berlin within the borough of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf. Established as a German town law, town in 1705 and named after Sophia Charlotte of Hanover, Queen consort of Kingdom of Prussia, Prussia, it is best known for Charlottenburg Palace, the largest surviving royal palace in Berlin, and the adjacent museums. Charlottenburg was an independent city to the west of Berlin until 1920 when it was incorporated into "Greater Berlin Act, Groß-Berlin" (Greater Berlin) and transformed into a borough. The Jewish Publication Society (JPS), originally known as the Jewish Publication Society of America, is the oldest nonprofit, nondenominational publisher of Jewish works in English. Paul Baerwald
Paul Baerwald (September 27, 1871 – July 2, 1961) was a German-born Jewish-American banker and philanthropist. Early life and family Baerwald was born on September 27, 1871 in Frankfurt-on-Main, Germany, the son of Dr. Herman Baerwald and Selma Frenkel. Career Baerwald began working in the banking business with Lazard-Speyer-Ellissen in Frankfurt from 1886 to 1891. He then worked for Speyer Brothers in London from 1891 to 1896. From 1896 to 1906, he worked with Speyer and Company in New York City. He then worked as a partner in Lazard Frères until 1930, when he retired from banking to focus on entirely on philanthropic and communal endeavors. Temple Emanu-El of New York is a synagogue in New York City, built for Congregation Emanu-El of New York in 1928–1930. It is one of the largest synagogues in the world. The first Temple Emanu-El This is the second synagogue with this name. Previously, there was a synagogue of the same name, built in 1868. This building was demolished in 1927 before the construction of the new, present synagogue. History In 1929, the congregation moved to its present location at 65th Street and Fifth Avenue, where the Temple building was constructed to designs of Robert D. The Union for Reform Judaism (URJ), known as the Union of American Hebrew Congregations (UAHC) until 2003, founded in 1873 by Rabbi Isaac Mayer Wise, is the congregational arm of Reform Judaism in North America. The other two arms established by Rabbi Wise are the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion and the Central Conference of American Rabbis.
