David Lewis (British MP)
David Lewis (died 1872) was a former MP in Wales, representing Carmarthen constituency. He was elected in the 1835 general election, narrowly defeating the sitting Whig member, William Henry Yelverton. 1835 United Kingdom General Election
The 1835 United Kingdom general election was called when Parliament was dissolved on 29 December 1834. Polling took place between 6 January and 6 February 1835, and the results saw Robert Peel's Conservatives make large gains from their low of the 1832 election, but the Whigs maintained a large majority. Under the terms of the Lichfield House Compact the Whigs had entered into an electoral pact with the Irish Repeal Association of Daniel O'Connell, which had contested the previous election as a separate party. The Radicals were also included in this alliance. Dates of election The eleventh United Kingdom Parliament was dissolved on 29 December 1834. The new Parliament was summoned to meet on 19 February 1835, for a maximum seven-year term from that date. William Henry Yelverton
The Hon. William Henry Yelverton (5 December 1791 – 28 April 1884) was a Whig politician who served as MP for Carmarthen Boroughs from 1832 to 1835. Yelverton inherited considerable lands and industry from his family and from his marriage to Elizabeth Lucy Morgan. Early life and education Yelverton was born on 5 December 1791 in Belle Isle Castle, Ireland, to William Charles Yelverton, 2nd Marquess of Avonmore, and his wife Mary, daughter of John Reid. The Yelverton family held the title of Viscount Avonmore. He was educated at Eton College and enrolled as a student at Brasenose College, Oxford. On 2 June 1825 in Clifton, Gloucester, he married Elizabeth Lucy Morgan, daughter of John Morgan of Furnace. His wife died in 1863; they had one son and three daughters. In 1811, Yelverton inherited the Blaiddbwll estate by an uncle to his mother, Captain John Parr. The 1837 United Kingdom general election was triggered by the death of King William IV and produced the first Parliament of the reign of his successor, Queen Victoria. It saw Robert Peel's Conservatives close further on the position of the Whigs, who won their fourth election of the decade. The election marked the last time that a Parliament was dissolved as a result of the demise of the Crown. The dissolution of Parliament six months after a demise of the Crown, as provided for by the Succession to the Crown Act 1707, was abolished by the Reform Act 1867. David Morris (Whig Politician)
David Morris (1800 – 30 September 1864) was a British Whig and Liberal politician, and banker. Early life The eldest son of banker William Morris, he spent his early life working in the family firm, Morris and Sons of Carmarthen. He retired from the firm at a young age having amassed a substantial personal fortune. Parliamentary career Morris was elected Whig MP for Carmarthen Boroughs at the 1837 general election. Morris defeated the former member, W.H. Yelverton of Whitland Abbey, who had held the seat from 1832 until 1835. Although Morris held broadly Liberal views his political opinions were subordinated by his belief that his first duty was to represent his constituents, and in this regard he was a diligent member of the Commons who was rarely absent from divisions.
