David Jaeger (composer)
David Jaeger (born 9 November 1947) is an American born Canadian composer, music producer, radio producer, and performer. An associate of the Canadian Music Centre and a member of the Canadian League of Composers, he is best known for his compositions and performances of electronic music. In 1971 he co-founded the Canadian Electronic Ensemble with whom he has been active as a composer and performer for decades. From 1973 until his retirement in 2013 he was a producer for CBC Radio. Life and career Born in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Jaeger was educated at the University of Wisconsin–Madison where he earned a Bachelor of Music in 1970. After being awarded a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship he pursued graduate studies under John Weinzweig and Gustav Ciamaga at the University of Toronto; earning a Master of Music in 1972. Composer
A composer is a person who writes music. The term is especially used to indicate composers of Western classical music, or those who are composers by occupation. Many composers are, or were, also skilled performers of music. Etymology and Definition The term is descended from Latin, ''compōnō''; literally "one who puts together". Canadian Music Center
The Canadian Music Centre was founded in 1959 by a group of Canadian composers who saw a need to create a repository for Canadian music. It now holds Canada's largest collection of Canadian concert music, and works to promote the music of its Associate Composers in Canada and around the world. Initially the centre focused on collecting and cataloguing serious musical works, developing a catalogue of scores, copying and duplicating the music, and making it available for loan, nationally and internationally. The centre currently has over 18,000 scores and/or works by almost 700 Canadian contemporary composers available through its lending library. Orford String Quartet
The Orford String Quartet was a Canadian string quartet active from 1965 through 1991. They came to be the leading string quartet in Canada, and were well-known internationally. Founding In 1951, Gilles Lefebvre launched a summer music camp for Les Jeunesses Musicales du Canada at Mont-Orford National Park in Quebec. The summer camp developed into the Orford Arts Centre, now Orford Music. Lorand Fenyves, a violinist and teacher then based in Geneva, began teaching at the music camp in 1963. The summer of 1965, two Canadians that Fenyves was teaching in Geneva, Andrew Dawes and Kenneth Perkins, came to study at Orford. With the support of Lefebvre and Fenyves, the two violinists formed a string quartet with Terence Helmer and Marcel Saint-Cyr. Their first concert was on 11 August 1965. JUNO Award
The Juno Awards, more popularly known as the JUNOS, are awards presented annually to Canadian musical artists and bands to acknowledge their artistic and technical achievements in all aspects of music. New members of the Canadian Music Hall of Fame are also inducted as part of the awards ceremonies. The Juno Awards are often referred to as the Canadian equivalent of the Brit Awards in the United Kingdom or the Grammy Awards given in the United States. James Montgomery (composer)
James Louis Montgomery (born 6 February 1943) is a Canadians, Canadian music composer, performer, and arts administrator. For about 20 years he was the artistic director of The Music Gallery. He is also a founding member of the Canadian Electronic Ensemble with whom he performs and records. As a composer he is known for incorporating electronic technology into his works. Early life and education Born in Ravenna, Ontario, Montgomery earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 1966 from Baldwin–Wallace Conservatory of Music. He pursued further studies at Northwestern University with John Weinzweig and at the University of Toronto (UT) with Gustav Ciamaga. From the UT he earned a Master of Music degree in 1972. Larry Lake (musician)
Larry Ellsworth Lake (2 July 1943 – 17 September 2013) was an American–born Canadian composer, trumpeter, freelance writer on music, radio broadcaster, and record producer. As a composer he was primarily known for his electronic music. His musical compositions are characterized by their integration of acoustic instruments with electronic ones in live performance. From 1985 until his death he served as Artistic Director of the Canadian Electronic Ensemble, a group of which he was a founding member. For nearly 30 years he hosted and served as music consultant for the CBC Radio program '' Two New Hours''. An associate of the Canadian Music Centre (CMC), he was the chair of the CMC's Ontario Region Council and was an executive member of the CMC's national board. David Grimes (born 9 March 1948, in Salem, Massachusetts) is an American composer. In 1970 he graduated from the Berklee College of Music with a Bachelor of Music degree. He then entered the University of Toronto where he earned a Master of Music in 1972. In 1971, he co-founded the Canadian Electronic Ensemble (CEE) with David Jaeger (composer), David Jaeger, James Montgomery (composer), James Montgomery and Larry Lake (musician), Larry Lake. He performed internationally and made several recordings with the group over the next 15 years. In 1976 his composition ''Increscents'' won the CBC National Radio Competition for Young Composers. In 1986 he returned to the United States. He currently teaches on the faculty of Northeastern University.
