David Greaves
David Greaves (1 September 1946 – 5 October 2019) was an English former professional snooker player. Life David Greaves was born 1 September 1946 in St-Annes-on-Sea (Lancashire). In his early life he went to Stanley Junior School in Cleveleys and then onto senior school in Fleetwood. He studied Quantity Surveying at Blackpool Technical College. Throughout his early life he dedicated all his time to practicing and playing snooker and after college he succeeded in joining the ranks of the professionals. In April 1977 he founded the Commonwealth Sporting Club, opened by the late Joe Davis, the Commonwealth was the kick-start for a new breed of snooker clubs. It was the brainchild of local snooker professional David Greaves who wanted to offer an alternative to the clubs in that era that were typically dark and dingy affairs - manifesting the image of a misspent youth. David Taylor (snooker Player)
David Taylor (born 29 July 1943) is an English former professional snooker player. He won the World and English Amateur Championships in 1968, before the success of those wins encouraged him to turn professional. He was nicknamed "The Silver Fox" because of his prematurely grey hair. Blackpool Victoria Hospital
Blackpool Victoria Hospital, known locally as The Vic, is the main hospital for Blackpool and the Fylde Coast in Lancashire, England. It is managed by the Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. History The hospital was originally located on Whitegate Drive and was opened as the Blackpool Hospital in 1894. It became the Blackpool Victoria Hospital by consent of Queen Victoria when it was enlarged in 1898. The foundation stone of a new building on East Park Drive was laid by the Earl of Derby on 9 June 1933. The new hospital opened there in 1936 and then joined the National Health Service in 1948. Ray Edmonds
Ray Edmonds (born 25 April 1936 in Grimsby, Lincolnshire) is a former English professional player of English billiards and snooker. He twice won the World Amateur Snooker title, and won the World Professional Billiards Championship in 1985. Playing career Edmonds first played snooker as an amateur, winning the World Amateur crown in 1972 and 1974. After turning professional he reached the main stages World Snooker Championship on four occasions, in 1980, 1981, 1985 and 1986, on each occasion losing in the first round. He was as a semi-finalist at the 1981 English Professional Championship, and runner-up in the invitational 1982 Bass and Golden Leisure Classic. Crucible Theatre
The Crucible Theatre (often referred to simply as "The Crucible") is a theatre in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England which opened in 1971. Although it hosts regular theatrical performances, it is best known for hosting professional snooker's most prestigious tournament, the World Snooker Championship, which has been held annually at the venue since 1977. Its name is a reference to the local steel industry. In May 2022 plans were unveiled to build a new 3,000-seater venue nearby with a bridge connecting the two buildings. Willie Thorne
William Joseph Thorne (4 March 195417 June 2020) was an English professional snooker player. He won one ranking title, the 1985 Classic. He also reached the final of the 1985 UK Championship, losing 16–14 to Steve Davis after leading 13–8. He was noted for his break-building, and was among the first players to compile 100 century breaks. He earned the nickname "Mr Maximum". After retiring as a player, Thorne became a snooker commentator, primarily for the BBC. Career Thorne was born on 4 March 1954 at the family home in Anstey, a village located near Leicester, to Bill Thorne, a Desford Colliery miner, and his wife Nancy. He had two brothers. 1981 World Snooker Championship
The 1981 World Snooker Championship, (also referred to as the 1981 Embassy World Snooker Championship due to sponsorship) was a ranking professional snooker tournament which took place from 7 April to 20 April 1981 at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, England. The tournament was the 1981 edition of the annual World Snooker Championship, a World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA)-sanctioned event which was first held in 1927. The 1981 tournament was the fifth consecutive world championship to take place at the Crucible Theatre since 1977. The total prize fund for the tournament was £75,000, of which £20,000 went to the winner. Fred Davis (snooker Player)
Fred Davis (14 August 1913 – 16 April 1998) was an English professional player of snooker and English billiards. He was an eight-time World Snooker Championship winner from 1948 World Snooker Championship, 1948 to 1956 World Professional Match-play Championship, 1956, and a two-time winner of the World Billiards Championship (English billiards), World Billiards Championship. He was the brother of 15-time world snooker champion Joe Davis; the pair were the only two players to win both snooker and English billiards world championships, and Fred is second on the list of those holding most world snooker championship titles, behind Joe.
