David George Stead
David George Stead (6 March 1877 – 2 August 1957) was an Australian marine biologist, ichthyologist, oceanographer, conservationist and writer. He was born at St Leonards in Sydney, and educated at public schools and the Sydney Technical College. In 1909 he was a founder of, and during its early years the main driving force behind, the Wildlife Preservation Society of Australia. In December 1912 he became an inaugural committee member of the Eugenics Society of New South Wales. His career included many government positions both in Australia and in Malaya. He served as the Australian representative on international committees concerned with fisheries science, marine biology and oceanography. He married three times, the third time to botanist and writer Thistle Yolette Harris in 1951. He died at his home in Watsons Bay, Sydney. Marine Biology
Marine biology is the scientific study of the biology of marine life, organisms in the sea. Given that in biology many phyla, families and genera have some species that live in the sea and others that live on land, marine biology classifies species based on the environment rather than on taxonomy. A large proportion of all life on Earth lives in the ocean. The exact size of this ''large proportion'' is unknown, since many ocean species are still to be discovered. The ocean is a complex three-dimensional world covering approximately 71% of the Earth's surface. Stead Foundation
The David G. Stead Memorial Wildlife Research Foundation of Australia (or Stead Wildlife Foundation or Stead Foundation) is an Australian non-profit organisation that aims to promote conservation and environment advocacy and education. Established in 1963 as a memorial to David George Stead, a pioneer conservationist and marine biologist throughout the early 20th century, the Stead Foundation is a project-based organisation. Its inaugural and most enduring project was the establishment of the Wirrimbirra Sanctuary, gifted to the National Trust of Australia (New South Wales) in 1965. ''The Man Who Loved Children'' is a 1940 novel by Australian writer Christina Stead. It was not until a reissue edition in 1965, with an introduction by poet Randall Jarrell, that it found widespread critical acclaim and popularity. ''Time'' magazine included the novel in its ''TIME 100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005''. The novel has been championed by novelists Robert Stone, Jonathan Franzen and Angela Carter. Christina Stead
Christina Stead (17 July 190231 March 1983) was an Australian novelist and short-story writer acclaimed for her satirical wit and penetrating psychological characterisations. Christina Stead was a committed Marxist, although she was never a member of the Communist Party. She spent much of her life outside Australia, although she returned before her death. Bargo, New South Wales
Bargo is a town in the Macarthur Region, New South Wales, Australia, in the Wollondilly Shire. It is approximately 100 km south west of Sydney. It is situated between the township of Tahmoor (north) and the village of Yanderra (south), and accessible via the Hume Highway that links Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne. It was previously known as West Bargo and Cobargo. Facilities Bargo railway station was first opened on 19 July 1919 as ''West Bargo'' and then renamed in 1921 as ''Bargo''.
