David Galloway (botanist)
David John Galloway , FRSNZ (7 May 1942 – 6 December 2014) was a biochemist, botanist, and lichenologist. Biography Galloway grew up in Invercargill. After graduation from Southland Boys' High School, he studied at the University of Otago. As an undergraduate he assisted James Murray, the first New Zealand lichenologist of the twentieth century, and this experience influenced the direction of his scientific career. There he graduated in 1963 with B.Sc., in 1965 with M.Sc., and in 1972 with Ph.D. — all three degrees in biochemistry. At the University of Otago, he was from 1963 to 1965 a fellow and tutor at Knox College and from 1965 to 1968 an assistant lecturer in biochemistry. He became in 1969 a scientific officer in the Applied Biochemistry Division of New Zealand's Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) in Palmerston North. Invercargill ( , mi, Waihōpai is the southernmost and westernmost city in New Zealand, and one of the southernmost cities in the world. It is the commercial centre of the Southland region. Peter Wilfred James
Peter Wilfred James (1930–2014) was an English botanist and lichenologist. He was a pioneer in the study of lichens as environmental indicators, especially of atmospheric pollution. Early life and education Peter W. James grew up in Sutton Coldfield, which was then a rural suburb of Birmingham and his interests in natural history and exploring the countryside were encouraged by his older sister. His father was a headteacher. James attended Bishop Vesey's Grammar School in Warwickshire from 1943 until 1949. He was awarded a state scholarship that supported his university study. He graduated with a First class B.Sc. in botany from the University of Liverpool in 1952 with a minor in zoology (1951). The Parmeliaceae is a large and diverse family of Lecanoromycetes. With over 2700 species in 71 genera, it is the largest family of lichen-forming fungi. ''Gallaicolichen'' is a fungal genus in the division Ascomycota. The relationship of this taxon to other taxa within the division is unknown ('' incertae sedis''), and it has not yet been placed with certainty into any class, order, or family. This is a monotypic genus, containing the single species ''Gallaicolichen pacificus'', a foliicolous (leaf-dwelling) lichen. Taxonomy The type specimen of ''Gallaicolichen pacificus'' was originally collected from Kolukola Park in Hamakua, Hawaii, where it was found growing on ''Syzygium cumini''. Ascomycota is a phylum of the kingdom Fungi that, together with the Basidiomycota, forms the subkingdom Dikarya. Its members are commonly known as the sac fungi or ascomycetes. It is the largest phylum of Fungi, with over 64,000 species. The defining feature of this fungal group is the " ascus" (), a microscopic sexual structure in which nonmotile spores, called ascospores, are formed. However, some species of the Ascomycota are asexual, meaning that they do not have a sexual cycle and thus do not form asci or ascospores. International Association For Lichenology
The International Association for Lichenology (IAL) is an organisation that encourages the understanding of lichens and lichenology, and promotes their study and conservation worldwide. It unites lichenologists across the globe, as well as national and regional organisations into one group. It is affiliated to the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS). The IAL organises field courses and excursions, as well as symposia which are the biggest events in lichenology on the international level. The 8th International Symposium will be held in Helsinki, Finland, in August 2016. The IAL publishes a biennial journal, the International Lichenological Newsletter which was the raison d'etre for the IAL being formed in 1967 in order to provide a forum for lichenologists worldwide to communicate with one other.
