David Dermer
David Dermer (born 1963) was a Miami Beach City Commissioner before being elected as their Mayor. He is a lifelong Democrat, but supported George W. Bush for president in 2004. His brother is Ron Dermer, the former Israeli ambassador to the United States. His father Jay Dermer also served as mayor of Miami Beach. Career Dermer served as Mayor for three terms from 2002 until 2008. He also serves on the advisory board of the Sacred Grounds Foundation. In 2005, Dermer passed a law that banned sex offenders from living within 2,500 feet of schools, parks and other places frequented by minors. Fearing an influx of sex offenders from Miami Beach, other Miami Dade County cities soon passed similar ordinances, eventually leading to the creation of the Julia Tuttle Causeway sex offender colony. The mayor of Miami Beach is the Nonpartisanism, nonpartisan chief executive of the municipal government of Miami Beach, Florida, and the presiding member of its seven-member City Commission. Matilde "Matti" Herrera Bower is a Cuban-American politician and retired dental assistant. Bower has been elected to three two-year terms as the Mayor of Miami Beach, Florida, beginning in 2007. Most recently, because of a loophole in the term limits rule, Bower was able to run for an open commission seat, but lost by a considerably large margin in the run-off race against retired banker, Joy Malakoff. Bower won re-election to her third and final term as mayor on November 1, 2011. She is the first woman, as well as the first Hispanic, to serve as Mayor of Miami Beach. Julia Tuttle Causeway Sex Offender Colony
The Julia Tuttle Causeway sex offender colony (also called "Bookville" by former residents) was an encampment of banished, registered sex offenders who were living beneath the Julia Tuttle Causeway—a highway connecting Miami, Florida to Miami Beach, Florida , United States—from 2006 to April 2010. The colony was created by a lobbyist named Ron Book, who wrote ordinances in several different Miami-Dade County cities to restrict convicted sex offenders from living within of schools, parks, bus stops, or homeless shelters. Since Book was also head of the Miami Homeless Trust, he was also in charge of finding housing for the released sexual offenders. Under these ordinances, the only areas where sex offenders could legally reside within Miami-Dade County were the Miami Airport and the Florida Everglades.
