David De Vries
David (Dave) de Vries (born 1961) is a New Zealand film writer, director, and producer who also writes and illustrates comic books. He was born in New Zealand and emigrated with his family to Australia. De Vries was born in Wellington, New Zealand, in 1961, and grew up in the inner suburb of Ngaio. He emigrated to Melbourne at an early age with his parents, where he lived until he was eighteen. After studying painting at RMIT he started his comic book career in the early 1980s with work for ''OzComics'', '' Phantastique'', ''MAD Magazine'' and ''Penthouse''. Together with Gary Chaloner, Glenn Lumsden and Tad Pietrzykowski he established Cyclone Comics in 1985, to ensure that their characters could be published while remaining under their control. De Vries and Lumsden entered the American market through First Comics, Nicotat and Malibu Graphics with ''The Southern Squadron'', a superhero team that had taken over the Cyclone title. ''Mad'' (stylized as ''MAD'') is an American humor magazine first published in 1952. It was founded by editor Harvey Kurtzman and publisher William Gaines, launched as a comic book series before it became a magazine. It was widely imitated and influential, affecting satirical media, as well as the cultural landscape of the 20th century, with editor Al Feldstein increasing readership to more than two million during its 1973–74 circulation peak. From February 1984 through February 1996, DC Comics held the license to publish comic books based upon the ''Star Trek'' franchise, namely ''Star Trek: The Original Series'' (TOS) and '' Star Trek: The Next Generation'' (TNG). ''Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight'', often simply called ''Legends of the Dark Knight'', is the name of several DC comic books featuring Batman. The original series launched in 1989 as the third major monthly Batman title, following the popularity of Tim Burton's 1989 film ''Batman''. Many of the stories follow the tone of Frank Miller's '' Batman: Year One''. The series differed from other Batman titles of the time. The creative team rotated with every story arc and the stories stood alone, unlike the inter-connected nature of other Batman comics. The Grand Comics Database (GCD) is an Internet-based project to build a database of comic book information through user contributions. The GCD project catalogues information on creator credits, story details, reprints, and other information useful to the comic book reader, comic collector, fan, and scholar. The Phantom
''The Phantom'' is an American adventure comic strip, first published by Lee Falk in February 1936. The main character, the Phantom, is a fictional costumed crime-fighter who operates from the fictional African country of Bangalla. The character has been adapted for television, film and video games. The series began with a daily newspaper strip on February 17, 1936, followed by a color Sunday strip on May 28, 1939; both are still running as of .
