David De Launay
David de Launay was a French-born resident of St. Louis who led a group of Osage people to France in 1827. History De Launay led a group of eleven Osage men and one Native American woman, Sacred Sun, to France in 1827. Whilst leaving St. Louis, their raft was wrecked, causing them to lose all their furs, and half of the Osage decided to return to their village. The others decided to go on, met up with de Launay, and traveled down the Mississippi River to New Orleans and then on to New England. De Launay and his crew then sailed for Le Havre, France arriving on July 27 1827. Osage Nation
The Osage Nation ( ) ( Osage: ππ» ππΌπ°ππΌπ°Ν ('), "People of the Middle Waters") is a Midwestern Native American tribe of the Great Plains. The tribe developed in the Ohio and Mississippi river valleys around 700 BC along with other groups of its language family. They migrated west after the 17th century, settling near the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers, as a result of Iroquois invading the Ohio Valley in a search for new hunting grounds. The term "Osage" is a French version of the tribe's name, which can be roughly translated as "calm water". The Osage people refer to themselves in their indigenous Dhegihan Siouan language as ππ°ππ°ππ· ('), or "Mid-waters". Sacred Sun
Sacred Sun (Mohongo) (1809β1836) was an Osage woman who lived on Osage land in what is now Missouri, US. She took a journey all throughout Europe, and tales of her trip were recorded in French and American newspapers and pamphlets of that age. After returning to the United States, her portrait was painted and hung up for display in Washington D.C. to show off her skills and determination. Early life Sacred Sun was born in 1809 in what is now Saline County along the Missouri River in Missouri. Her Osage name was Mi-Hoβn-Ga. As a baby, Sacred Sun and other Osage children were strapped to a tree branch on a board while their mothers worked tending gardens, preserving food, and doing other domestic work. By the age of 12 Sacred Sun was expected to do her share of work. She knew how to care for children, sew, hunt, and preserve meat and food.
