David Currie, Baron Currie Of Marylebone
David Anthony Currie, Baron Currie of Marylebone (born 9 December 1946) is a British economist specialising in regulation, and a cross-bench member of the House of Lords. Currie was the inaugural Chairman of the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). Education and career Currie was born in Streatham, south London, and attended Battersea Grammar School. He obtained a first class degree in mathematics at Manchester University and a master's degree in National Economic Planning at Birmingham University, after which he obtained a post as an economist with Hoare Govett. He took a position in 1972 as a lecturer at Queen Mary College, University of London, and progressed to an appointment as Professor of Economics. ''The Right Honourable'' ( abbreviation: ''Rt Hon.'' or variations) is an honorific style traditionally applied to certain persons and collective bodies in the United Kingdom, the former British Empire and the Commonwealth of Nations. Colette Bowe
Dame Mary Colette Bowe (born 1946) is an English entrepreneur and former civil servant. Born in Liverpool, Bowe has a PhD in economics from Queen Mary University of London. In her executive career, she was in the UK civil service from 1975 to 1987. She was involved in the Westland affair as she was ordered by her boss, Leon Brittan, the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, to leak a letter highly damaging to Michael Heseltine. As she was the chief information officer at the Department of Trade and Industry, it led to Brittan's resignation from the cabinet as well. In an interview given to Charles Moore for his authorised biography of Margaret Thatcher, Bowe ended her long-standing refusal to discuss the issue having not said before who had ordered the leak. In the United Kingdom, life peers are appointed members of the peerage whose titles cannot be inherited, in contrast to hereditary peers. In modern times, life peerages, always created at the rank of baron, are created under the Life Peerages Act 1958 and entitle the holders to seats in the House of Lords, presuming they meet qualifications such as age and citizenship. Charter88
Charter 88 was a British pressure group that advocated constitutional and electoral reform and owes its origins to the lack of a written constitution. It began as a special edition of the ''New Statesman'' magazine in 1988 and it took its name from Charter 77 – the Czechoslovak dissident movement co-founded by Václav Havel. London Business School (LBS) is a business school and a constituent college of the federal University of London. Battersea Grammar School
Battersea Grammar School was a Voluntary-Controlled Secondary Grammar School in South London. It was established in Battersea in 1875 by the Sir Walter St John Trust and moved to larger premises in Streatham in 1936. The school closed when it was amalgamated with Rosa Bassett School, a grammar school for girls, in 1977 to create the new Furzedown Secondary School, a mixed comprehensive school in Tooting. History Beginnings Although the school was only formally established in 1875 it shares its early history with that of the Sir Walter St John's School in Battersea.
