David Bergman (baseball)
David Franciscus Johan Bergman (born 16 August 1981 in Haarlem, the Netherlands) is a Dutch baseball player who currently plays for Kinheim of the Honkbal Hoofdklasse baseball league. Career Bergman started his career at Haarlem based Nicols and later at DSS. The longest period of his career he played for Pioniers from Hoofddorp. He was first selected for the Netherlands' youth squad in 1997 for which he played three seasons. In these years he became European Champion for three consecutive years. In 1999 he won de Roel de Mon Award, a trophy for the best junior pitcher in de Honkbal Hoofdklasse. A year later he won the 2000 Triple Crown Tournament in Belgium with the Dutch national B-team. Bergman was first selected for the Netherlands national baseball team in 2003. There he teamed up with Pioniers team mates Robin van Doornspeek and Roger Kops, who are also both pitchers. In baseball, the pitcher is the player who throws ("pitches") the baseball from the pitcher's mound toward the catcher to begin each play, with the goal of retiring a batter, who attempts to either make contact with the pitched ball or draw a walk. Pioniers is a baseball and softball team based in Hoofddorp, the Netherlands. The club is currently sponsored by Raamsdonkveer-based construction company ''Vaessen BV'' and the team is officially known as the Vaessen Pioniers. Pioniers baseball team plays in the Honkbal Hoofdklasse, the top level of professional baseball in the Netherlands. The club's most successful year was 1997 they reached the Holland Series for the first time in the club's history by beating reigning champions DOOR Neptunus in the play-offs. In the Holland Series they claimed a 3-2 victory over Mr. Cocker HCAW, making them Dutch champions. 2009 World Baseball Classic
The 2009 World Baseball Classic (WBC) was an international baseball competition. It began on 5 9 and finished 5 26. Unlike in 2006, when the round-robin format of the first two rounds led to some eliminations being decided by run-difference tiebreakers, the first two rounds of the 2009 edition were modified double-elimination format. The modification was that the final game of each bracket was winner-take-all, even if won by the team emerging from the loser's bracket, although that game only affected seeding, as two teams always advanced from each bracket. The biggest surprise in the first round was the Netherlands, which twice defeated the Dominican Republic in Pool D to advance. The Holland Series has been the annual championship series of the highest level of professional baseball in the Netherlands since 1987, concluding the postseason of Honkbal Hoofdklasse. Haarlemse Honkbalweek
The Haarlem Baseball Week ( nl, Honkbalweek Haarlem, before 2016 known as ) is an international invitation baseball tournament at the in Haarlem, Netherlands. It was first held in and has been held every other year in even-numbered years since . In December 2016, a few months after the 28th edition of the event, the organisation of the tournament announced that this had been the last edition and that there would be no new editions due to financial problems. A workgroup was formed to find sponsors in order to realise a relaunch, which succeeded after several companies and the municipality of Haarlem guaranteed an amount that would cover the costs of at least three new editions. The 2018 Haarlem Baseball Week, the 29th edition of the event, was won by Japan, their fourth title. The 2020 edition of the tournament was cancelled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
