Davenport Blue Sox
The Davenport Blue Sox was the name given to three minor league baseball teams based in Davenport, Iowa. The first version of the Blue Sox played in the Class B Three-I League from 1913–1916. The second played in the Class D Mississippi Valley League from 1929–1933, and the third version played in the Western League from 1934–1937. From 1936–1937, the team was a minor league affiliate of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Western League (1900–1958)
The Western League was the name of several leagues in American minor league baseball. First, its earliest progenitor, which existed from 1885 to 1899, was the predecessor of the American League. Later, during the 20th century, there were four incarnations of the Western League, including a Class D loop, formerly the Nebraska State League, that played from 1939 to 1941, and an independent loop (outside of "organized baseball") that began play in 1995. This article, however, concentrates on the Western Leagues that played from 1900 to 1937 and from 1947 to 1958. John Fitzpatrick (baseball)
John Arthur Fitzpatrick (March 19, 1904 – November 19, 1990), nicknamed "Foghorn" and "Eagle Beak", was an American Major League Baseball coach and scout and minor league catcher and manager. He was born in LaSalle, Illinois, but later in his life lived in McAlester, Oklahoma. Fitzpatrick appeared in 1,933 games over 21 seasons (1924–41; 1944–46) as a minor league player, batting .288. At one point is his career, he went one and a half years without striking out. He was a coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1953–55 and the Milwaukee Braves from 1958–59. He managed minor league teams intermittently during the period of 1936–63 in the Pittsburgh, Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Indians, Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Angels farm systems. He was a longtime associate of Fred Haney, whom he served as a coach with the Hollywood Stars, Pirates and Braves, and for whom he scouted for the Angels after his managing career. He died at age ...
