Dave Smith (poet)
Dave Smith (born December 19, 1942 in Portsmouth, Virginia) is an American poet, writer, critic, editor, and educator. Biography Dave Smith holds BA, MA, and PhD degrees in English from the University of Virginia, Southern Illinois University, and Ohio University, respectively. He is the author of more than a dozen volumes of poetry, and has also published works of prose and edited collections. Smith has taught literature and creative writing at numerous institutions of higher education, including the University of Utah, the University of Florida, Virginia Commonwealth University, Louisiana State University, and Johns Hopkins University. Formerly editor of ''The Southern Review'', Smith now serves as editor of the Southern Messenger Poets series from Louisiana State University Press. David Bottoms (born 1949 in Canton, Georgia) is an American poet. Biography Bottoms' first book, ''Shooting Rats at the Bibb County Dump'', was selected by Robert Penn Warren as winner of the 1979 Walt Whitman Award of the Academy of American Poets. His poems have appeared in magazines such as ''The Southern Review'', ''The Atlantic'', ''The New Yorker'', '' Harper's'', ''The Paris Review'', and ''Poetry'', as well as in over four dozen anthologies and textbooks. Sewanee Writers' Conference
The Sewanee Writers' Conference is a writers' conference held every summer on the campus of the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. The conference was started in 1989 by founding director Wyatt Prunty and the current director is Leah Stewart. The conference is funded largely by an endowment from the estate of acclaimed American playwright Tennessee Williams. The conference takes place over twelve days, during which participants attend writing workshops, readings, panel presentations, lectures on the craft of poetry, fiction, and playwriting, and numerous social gatherings. ''The Southern Review'' is a quarterly literary magazine that was established by Robert Penn Warren in 1935 at the behest of Charles W. Pipkin and funded by Huey Long as a part of his investment in Louisiana State University.
