Dave Gorman (jockey)
David Gorman (1926 - 1987) was an American jockey in Thoroughbred racing born in Elmont, New York, home to Belmont Park racetrack where in 1951 he would win the most important race of his career. In April 1942, Dave Gorman rode his first winner. In 1946, he was the first jockey to hire the inexperienced Lenny Goodman as his agent. Goodman would go on to a highly successful career, counting as clients star riders such as Braulio Baeza, Steve Cauthen, Bill Hartack, John L. Rotz, Bobby Ussery, among others. Among Gorman's most important wins were the 1949 Santa Anita Handicap, the 1951 Metropolitan Handicap, and that year's Jockey Club Gold Cup, which he won again in 1952, as well as the Whitney Stakes and Wood Memorial Stakes in 1952. Elmont, New York
Elmont is an unincorporated hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) located in northwestern Hempstead in Nassau County, New York, United States, along its border with the borough of Queens in New York City. The population was 35,265 at the 2020 census. The hamlet is famous for Belmont Park which hosts the Belmont Stakes, the third leg of the prestigious Triple Crown of thoroughbred racing. The Metropolitan Handicap, frequently called the "Met Mile", is an American Grade I Thoroughbred horse race held at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. Open to horses age three and older, it is contested on dirt over a distance of one mile (8 furlongs). Starting in 2014, it is now run on the same day as the Belmont Stakes in early June. The Met Mile is one of the most prestigious American races outside of the Triple Crown and Breeders' Cup. The Native Dancer Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually at Laurel Park Racecourse in Laurel, Maryland. Raced in early January, it is open to horses age three and older and is contested on dirt over a distance of mile. Its current purse is $75,000. From 1966 to 2002, the race was known as the Native Dancer Handicap. Honeymoon Handicap
The Honeymoon Stakes is a Grade III American Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-old fillies over a distance of one and one-eighth miles on the turf course scheduled annually in late May or early June at Santa Anita Park. The event currently carries a purse of $100,000. History The event was inaugurated on 18 May 1952 as the Sea Breeze Stakes and was run at Hollywood Park Racetrack in Inglewood, California before a crowd of 41,369. The Delaware Oaks Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually in mid July at Delaware Park Racetrack in Stanton near Wilmington, Delaware. Part of the Del Cap Festival Weekend that features other races over the two days including the Delaware Handicap, the Oaks is open to three-year-old fillies and is run over one and one-sixteenth miles on the dirt. Test Stakes
The Test Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race open to three-year-old fillies and run each summer at the Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York. It is contested at a distance of seven furlongs on the dirt and is an influential race in shaping the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint. A Grade I event, it carries a purse of $500,000. It was first run at Saratoga in 1922. Over the years it has also become an important race for fillies pointing towards the Grade I Alabama Stakes which also runs at Saratoga Race Course. Laurel Turf Cup Stakes
The Japan Turf Cup Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race run, held annually at Maryland's Laurel Park Racecourse. Open to horses age three and older, it is currently run on grass at a distance of one and one-half miles. Previously run as the Laurel Turf Cup Stakes, it was renamed the Japan Turf Cup Stakes in 2019. The race was a grade three race from 1985 through 2000. The Turf Cup was taken off the grass and run on the dirt of the main track on the following years; 1971, 72, 75, 76, 85, 86, 90, 96 and 1997. The race was not run between 2007-2010. It was announced by Laurel Park that the famed race would be restored in 2012 and run on October 27 at 12 furlongs and named the Laurel Turf Cup Stakes. Wood Memorial Stakes
The Wood Memorial Stakes is an American flat Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds held annually in April at Aqueduct Racetrack in Ozone Park, Queens, New York. It is run over a distance of 1 1/8 miles (9 furlongs) on dirt. The Wood Memorial has been run as a Grade II event since 2017. It was a Grade I race from 1974 (when grading was first introduced) to 1994 and again from 2002 to 2016. The Wood Memorial is one of the major prep races on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. The Spinaway Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York.
