Dash Navigation was a start-up based in Mountain View, California that produced devices and software for in- car navigation systems. Their first product was Dash Express. In January, 2007 Dash Express won "Best of CES" awards from both CNET and LAPTOP Magazine. The company was also named an Innovations 2007 honoree by the Consumer Electronics Association. Hardware The company used Sparkfactor Design for the Product Design (Industrial Design and Mechanical Engineering). Dash Express was released to the general public in March 2008. Automotive Navigation System
An automotive navigation system is part of the automobile controls or a third party add-on used to find direction in an automobile. It typically uses a satellite navigation device to get its position data which is then correlated to a position on a road. When directions are needed routing can be calculated. On the fly traffic information (road closures, congestion) can be used to adjust the route. Dead reckoning using distance data from sensors attached to the drivetrain, an accelerometer, a gyroscope, and a magnetometer can be used for greater reliability, as GNSS signal loss and/or multipath can occur due to urban canyons or tunnels. Mathematically, automotive navigation is based on the shortest path problem, within graph theory, which examines how to identify the path that best meets some criteria (shortest, cheapest, fastest, etc.) between two points in a large network. Dash Express
The Dash Express was an Internet-enabled personal navigation device manufactured by Dash Navigation Dash Express transmitted information using a GPRS connection back to Dash Navigation in order to enhance traffic routing as well as use wifi for the purpose of updating GPS. At time of its availability, the Dash Express was only available for use in the US. In June 2009, Research in Motion has acquired Dash Navigation and discontinued service and support of the Dash Express product effective June 30, 2010.
