Darya Shmeleva
Darya Viktorovna Shmelyova (russian: Дарья Викторовна Шмелёва; born 28 May 1976) is a retired Russian swimmer who won silver medals in the 200 m and 400 m medley at the 1993 European Aquatics Championships. She competed in the same events at the 1996 Summer Olympics and 1991 and 1995 European championships, but finished outside the medals. In early 1997 she married the Russian swimmer Alexander Popov (swimmer), Alexander Popov, and has since lived with him for years in Australia, Switzerland and Russia. LEN European Aquatics Championships
The European Aquatics Championships is the continental Aquatics championship for Europe, which is organised by LEN—the governing body for aquatics in Europe. The Championships are currently held every two years (in even years); and since 2022, they have included 5 aquatics disciplines: Swimming (long course/50m pool), Diving, Synchronised swimming, Open water swimming and High diving. Prior to 1999, the championships also included Water polo, which beginning in 1999 LEN split-off into a separate championships. The open water events are not held during the Olympic year. The Championships are generally held over a two-week time-period in mid-to-late Summer; however, in the most recent Summer Olympics years (2004, 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2020), the Championships were moved to the Spring to be moved away from the Summer Olympic Games. 1993 European Aquatics Championships
The 1993 European Aquatics Championships were held in Sheffield, United Kingdom from Tuesday 3 August to Sunday 8 August, in the 50 m pool of the Ponds Forge International Sports Centre. The 21st edition of the event was organised by the Ligue Européenne de Natation, LEN. Besides swimming there were titles contested in open water swimming, diving (sport), diving, synchronised swimming (women) and water polo. Alexander Popov (swimmer)
Aleksandr Vladimirovich Popov (Russian: Алекса́ндр Влади́мирович Попо́в, born 16 November 1971), better known as Alexander Popov, is a former Russian swimmer. Widely considered the greatest sprint swimmer in history, Popov won gold in the 50-metre and 100 m freestyle at the 1992 Olympics and repeated the feat at the 1996 Olympics, and is the only male in Olympic games history to defend both titles. He held the world record in the 50 m for eight years, and the 100 m for six. In 2003, aged 31, he won 50 m and 100 m gold at the 2003 World Championships.
