Darwin Railway Station
Darwin railway station is the terminus station of the Adelaide-Darwin rail corridor in the Darwin suburb of East Arm, Northern Territory. The station is from Adelaide Parklands Terminal station, from the end of the line and by road from Darwin's city centre. In front of the station building is a paved area long, but sealed hardstanding extends for a kilometre (1100 yards) to accommodate all carriages of the train on the single track. Since this area is not raised, small platforms with stairs are positioned for passengers. History The station opened on 4 February 2004 when ''The Ghan'' operated the first passenger service on the newly constructed line from Alice Springs. In 2004, a small 0-4-0 steam locomotive, built in 1886 by Baldwin Locomotive Works, was put on display in the station. __NOTOC__ East Arm is a suburb in the Northern Territory of Australia located in Darwin about east of Darwin City overlooking a part of Darwin Harbour known as the East Arm. Geography East Arm consists of land associated with a peninsula extending into the harbour and part of the channels of the following waterbodies that bound the peninsula's coastline: Blesser Creek to the north-west, Frances Bay to the west, the channel known as East Arm to the south and Hudson Creek to the south-east. The name has been used for the locale since the mid-nineteen century. The suburb’s boundary and name were gazetted on 21 April 2004. Parap is an inner suburb of the city of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. History Parap derived its name from that applied by Dr John A Gilruth, first Commonwealth Administrator in 1912. He applied the name Paraparap (believed to have been a pastoral property of Dewing near Moriac, Geelong), but had to abbreviate it to Parap later during his term. The North Australia Railway was a narrow gauge railway in the Northern Territory of Australia which ran from the territory capital of Darwin, once known as Palmerston, to Birdum, just south of Larrimah. Initially its name was the ''Palmerston and Pine Creek Railway''. The first section was opened 1889, the last in 1929. The railway closed in 1976. The Baldwin Locomotive Works (BLW) was an American manufacturer of railroad locomotives from 1825 to 1951. Originally located in Philadelphia, it moved to nearby Eddystone, Pennsylvania, in the early 20th century. Alice Springs Railway Station
Alice Springs railway station is located on the Adelaide–Darwin railway in Alice Springs. History The original Alice Springs station opened in Railway Terrace in 1929, when the Central Australia Railway opened. A freight yard was located on what is now Murray Neck's shopping complex. The present station opened on 9 October 1980 when a new line opened from Tarcoola. The station was included in the sale of Australian National's passenger operations to Great Southern Rail on 1 November 1997. It served as the terminus of the line until it was extended to Darwin in February 2004. A hardstand (also hard standing and hardstanding in British English) is a paved or hard-surfaced area on which vehicles, such as cars or aircraft, may be parked. The term may also be used informally to refer to an area of compacted hard surface such as macadam.
