Darwish and Darvish (and in French more prominently Darwich and Darwiche) are alternate transliterations of the Persian word "dervish", used in ar, درويش, referring to a Sufi aspirant. There is no v sound in most Modern Arabic dialects and so the originally Persian word is usually pronounced with a w sound in Arabic. The word appears as a surname in the Levant or for people descended from Levantine communities, particularly in Lebanon, Syria, Israel Afghanistan and the Palestinian territories. Karim Darwish ( ar, كريم درويش; born 29 August 1981) is an Egyptian squash player. Career overview As a junior player, he won the World Junior Championship title in 2000, and the British Junior Open title in 1999. Earlier in 2008, Darwish finished runner-up at the World Open, losing in the final to fellow Egyptian player Ramy Ashour (11–5, 8–11, 4–11, 5–11). Darwish displaced Amr Shabana to claim the world number 1 position after winning the prestigious 2008 Saudi International and 3 major titles (including the Qatar Classic) in 2008. Fadde Darwich
Fadde Darwich (born May 5, 1966, in Qamishli, Syria) is a Swedish stand-up comedian and former security officer at the public central square Stureplan. Darwich was together with the model Emma Withers. He is often a topic of discussion in the leading Swedish tabloid ''Aftonbladet''. Biography Darwich was born in 1966 in Qamishli, Syria, into a Kurdish family, and then immigrated to Sweden. Darwich quit Spy Bar after making statements about racism in the restaurant industry, mainly at Stureplan. On April 18, 2007, Darwich was arrested for financial crime, accused of using black money (SEK 2.4-3 million) for, among other things, salary payments. He was sentenced for this to one year and four months in prison. Adnan "Eddie" Darwiche is an Australian double murderer from Sydney, currently serving 2 sentences of life imprisonment plus 20 years without the possibility of parole for two murders and two assaults with a firearm. Sayed Darwish ( ar, سيد درويش, ; 17 March 1892 – 15 September 1923) was an Egyptian singer and composer who was considered the father of Egyptian popular music and one of Egypt's greatest musicians and seen by some as its single greatest composer. Early life Sayed Darwish was born in Kôm el-Dikka Alexandria on 17 March 1892. During his childhood his family could not afford to pay for his education, so he was sent to a religious school where he mastered the recitation of the Quran, studying under Muhammad Salamah. After graduating from the religious school and gaining the title ''Sheikh'' Sayyed Darwish, he studied for two years at al-Azhar, one of the most renowned religious universities in the world. Nonie Darwish ( ar, نوني درويش; born Nahid Darwish, 1949) is an Egyptian-American writer, founder of ''Arabs for Israel'' movement, and is Director of Former Muslims United. Darwish is an outspoken critic of Islam. The Southern Poverty Law Center has described her as an anti-Arab and anti-Muslim activist. Born in Egypt, Darwish is the daughter of an Egyptian Army lieutenant general, who was called a "shahid" by the Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser, after being killed in a targeted killing by the Israel Defense Forces in 1956. Darwish blames "the Middle Eastern Islamic culture and the propaganda of hatred taught to children from birth" for his death.
