The Darriwilian is the upper stage of the Middle Ordovician. It is preceded by the Dapingian and succeeded by the Upper Ordovician Sandbian Stage. The lower boundary of the Darriwilian is defined as the first appearance of the graptolite species ''Undulograptus austrodentatus'' around million years ago. It lasted for about 8.9 million years until the beginning of the Sandbian around million years ago. This stage of the Ordovician was marked by the beginning of the Andean-Saharan glaciation. Naming The name Darriwilian is derived from Darriwil, a parish in County of Grant, Victoria (Australia). The name was proposed in 1899 by Thomas Sergeant Hall. Andean-Saharan Glaciation
The Andean-Saharan glaciation, also known as the Early Palaeozoic Icehouse, the Early Palaeozoic Ice Age, the Late Ordovician glaciation, the end-Ordovician glaciation, or the Hirnantian glaciation, occurred during the Paleozoic from approximately 460 Ma to around 420 Ma, during the Late Ordovician and the Silurian period. The major glaciation during this period, which was formerly thought only to consist of the Hirnantian glaciation itself, but has now been recognized as a longer, more gradual event that began as early as the Darriwilian, is widely considered to be the leading cause of the Ordovician-Silurian extinction event. Huangnitang Village, Changshan
Huangnitang () is a village of Zhoutang village (), Tianma Subdistrict (), Changshan County, Quzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. It is the location of the Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP), which marks the boundary between the Third and Darriwilian Stages of the Middle Ordovician. The GSSP was ratified by the International Union of Geological Sciences in 1997. The boundary is defined as the first appearance of the graptolite ''Undulograptus austrodentatus''. The Dapingian is the third stage of the Ordovician period and the first stage of the Middle Ordovician series. It is preceded by the Floian and succeeded by the Darriwilian. A Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) is an internationally agreed upon reference point on a stratigraphic section which defines the lower boundary of a stage on the geologic time scale. The effort to define GSSPs is conducted by the International Commission on Stratigraphy, a part of the International Union of Geological Sciences. Most, but not all, GSSPs are based on paleontological changes. Hence GSSPs are usually described in terms of transitions between different faunal stages, though far more faunal stages have been described than GSSPs. The GSSP definition effort commenced in 1977. The County of Grant is one of the 37 counties of Victoria which are part of the cadastral divisions of Australia, used for land titles. It is located to the west of Melbourne, on the west side of Port Phillip and includes Geelong. Ballarat is on its north-western edge. Thomas Sergeant Hall
Thomas Sergeant Hall (23 December 1858 – 21 December 1915) was an Australian geologist and biologist, recipient of The Murchison Fund in 1901. Early life Hall was born in Geelong, the son of Thomas March Hall, a business man originally from Lincolnshire, England and Elizabeth, ''née'' Walshe, from Dublin. Hall was educated at the Geelong Grammar School where he came under the influence of James L. Cuthbertson. He was a junior master at Wesley College in 1879–80, then Hawthorn College and then went to the University of Melbourne, where he took his B.A. degree in 1886 with honours in natural science. This included work in palaeontology under Sir Frederick McCoy.
