Birr GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in the town of Birr in County Offaly, Ireland. The club is almost exclusively concerned with the game hurling and is one of the most successful hurling clubs in the country. While a number of teams represented Birr in the 1880s and 1890s, the current club was formally founded in 1909. The GAA Hurling All-Ireland Senior Championship, known simply as the All-Ireland Championship, is an annual inter-county hurling competition organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). It is the highest inter-county hurling competition in Ireland, and has been contested every year except one since 1887. Offaly Senior Club Hurling Championship
The Offaly Senior Hurling Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Molloy Environmental Senior Hurling Championship) is an annual hurling competition contested by top-tier Offaly GAA clubs. The 1998 National Hurling League (known as the Church & General National Hurling League) was the 66th season of the National Hurling League. Division 1 The league saw a major restructuring of the usual four divisions of eight teams. Division 1 was split into Group 1A and Group 1B with each group consisting of six teams. The top two teams in each group qualified for the knock-out stage. Limerick came into the season as defending champions of the 1997 season. Antrim, Cork, Dublin and Waterford all entered Division 1 as part of the restructuring. On 17 May 1998, Cork won the title after a 2-14 to 0-13 win over Waterford in the final. The Offaly County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) ( ga, Cumann Luthchleas Gael Coiste Uíbh Fhailí) or Offaly GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland, and is responsible for Gaelic games in County Offaly. Rory Hanniffy
Rory G. Hanniffy (born 1982) is an Irish hurler who played as a centre-back for the Offaly senior team. Born in Birr, County Offaly, Hanniffy first played competitive hurling during his schooling at Birr Community School. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he first linked up with the Offaly minor team before later joining the under-21 side. He made his senior debut during the 2001 National Hurling League. Hanniffy went on to enjoy a lengthy career, winning two National League (Division 2) medals. As a member of the Leinster inter-provincial team on a number of occasions, Hanniffy won six Railway Cup medals. At club level he is a two-time All-Ireland medallist with Birr. In addition to this he also won three Leinster medals and six championship medals. Throughout his career Hanniffy made 45 championship appearances.
