Darren Bender
Darren Bender became known in the UK TV industry for creating several long-running new film-maker's initiatives (Coming Up (TV series) & ''The Other Side'') at broadcaster Channel 4. As commissioning editor there, he encouraged over one hundred drama and documentary film makers to make films inexpensively and often experimentally for late night slots on Channel 4. After a spell as head of production at one of the regional branches of the UK Film Council, he set up ''Bigger Pictures'', his independent television and film production company. Coming Up (TV Series)
''Coming Up'' is a British television anthology series, broadcast on Channel 4. Each series contains up to eight episodes consisting of single stories by writers and directors with no previous experience or less than two hours previous screentime, who are sourced through a talent scheme of the same name. Each series encompasses a wide range of genres and topics, using a range of both experienced and fresh actors. It was created by Darren Bender who pitched the concept to the head of Channel 4's Independent Film & Video department, who turned it down. When Bender later became Commissioning Editor for NightTime at the channel, he asked the channel's drama department to co-commission it with him. It ran initially as Dogma TV (for two series) from 2000 to 2002 and then from 2003 until 2013 as Coming Up. Commissioning Editor
In book publishing, a commissioning editor is essentially a buyer. It is the job of the commissioning editor to advise the publishing house on which books to publish. Usually the actual decision of whether to contract a book is taken by a senior manager rather than the editor. Some magazines also employ commissioning editors. Responsibilities The other roles of commissioning editors vary between companies. Usually they are also responsible for ensuring that authors under contract deliver typescripts to specification and on time. They thus have an author management role. UK Film Council
The UK Film Council (UKFC) was a non-departmental public body set up in 2000 to develop and promote the film industry in the UK. It was constituted as a private company limited by guarantee, owned by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, and governed by a board of 15 directors. It was funded from various sources including The National Lottery. John Woodward was the Chief Executive Officer of the UKFC. On 26 July 2010, the government announced that the council would be abolished. Although one of the parties elected into that government had, for some months, promised a ''bonfire of the Quangos'', Woodward said that the decision had been taken with "no notice and no consultation".
