The Darlington Open. also known as the Darlington Association Tournament was a late Victorian era men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1881. It was organised by the Darlington Outdoor's Sports Association and held at the Feethams Cricket Ground Darlington, County Durham, England. The tournament ran annually until 1933. Darlington
Darlington is a market town in the Borough of Darlington, County Durham, England. The River Skerne flows through the town; it is a tributary of the River Tees. The Tees itself flows south of the town. In the 19th century, Darlington underwent substantial industrial development, spurred by the establishment there of the world's first permanent steam-locomotive-powered passenger railway: the Stockton and Darlington Railway. Mark Anthony Fenwick (born May 1948) is a British businessman, the fifth generation of his family to run the Fenwick department store chain founded in 1882. Mark Anthony Fenwick was born in May 1948. He was the son of John Fenwick, who died in 2008, at age 99, and who ran the firm from 1972; having joined it in 1932 after graduating from Cambridge University, and his wife Sheila. Constance Laura Mary Smith (1860 – 27 October 1934), also known as Constance Langley Smith, was an English tennis player active in the very early years of women's tennis in the 19th century. She was a finalist at the prestigious Northern Championships where she lost to Ireland's May Langrishe. She was active from 1881 to 1891 and won 2 career singles titles. Grainger Chaytor
David Grainger Chaytor KC. (11 May 1868 – 13 July 1913) was an Irish tennis player and later lawyer. In major tournaments of the time he was a singles quarter finalist at the 1890 Wimbledon Championships, a three time quarter finalist at the Irish Championships, and finalist at the 1887 Northern Championships. Between 1885 and 1900 he won 21 career titles. Career Grainger Chaytor was born on 11 May 1868 in Killiney, County Dublin in Ireland. He was one of three of his brothers who also played tennis, including the 1894 Wimbledon semi finalist Tom Chaytor. George Ball-Greene
George Courtney Ball-Greene (December 1861 – September 1939) was an Irish born tennis player. He was a two time semi-finalist at the Wimbledon Championships in the mens doubles event in 1902 and 1903. He was active from 1890 to 1919 and won 10 career singles titles. Career George was born on 25 November 1870 in Killiney, County Dublin, Ireland. He played his first tournament at the North of Ireland Championships in 1890 where he reached the semi-finals. Herbert Bowes-Lyon
Herbert Bowes-Lyon (15 August 1860 – 14 April 1897) was a Scottish tennis player and barrister, and uncle of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, mother of Queen Elizabeth II. He was a quarter finalist in the men's singles at the 1887 Wimbledon Championships, and a two time finalist at the Scottish Championships (1886, 1888). Herbert played 8 consecutive seasons from 1882 to 1888, and won 8 singles titles. John Galbraith Horn (16 April 1860 – 10 September 1925) also known as J.G. Horn or Galbraith Horn was a Scottish tennis player who competed at the Wimbledon Championships in 1881 and 1882. Herbert Wilberforce
Sir Herbert William Wrangham Wilberforce (8 February 1864 – 28 March 1941) was a British male tennis player. He was vice-president of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club from 1911 to 1921 and served as its president from 1921 to 1936. In 1887, he and Patrick Bowes-Lyon won the doubles in Wimbledon. In 1888 they were unable to defend their title when they were beaten in the Challenge Round by Ernest and William Renshaw. His best singles performance at Wimbledon came in 1886 when he reached the semifinal of the All Comers tournament in which he lost in five sets to compatriot Ernest Lewis. He also reached the quarter-finals of the singles in 1882, 1883 and 1888. Minden Fenwick (18 December 1864 – 8 February 1938) was an English then later New Zealand tennis player active during the late 19th century and early 20th century. The tournament was organised annually by the Norton Lawn Tennis Club and Norton Lawn Tennis Association, and was played on the Norton Cricket Club grounds at Norton, Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham, England.
