Dark Visions
''Dark Visions'' is a horror fiction compilation, with three short stories by Stephen King, three by Dan Simmons and a novella by George R. R. Martin. It was published by Orion on August 10, 1989. The collection was first published, with the same seven stories, under the title ''Night Visions 5'', by Dark Harvest on July 1, 1988. The book was also issued under the titles ''Dark Love'' and ''The Skin Trade''. Two of the stories by King, "Sneakers" and "Dedication", were later included in his 1993 anthology ''Nightmares & Dreamscapes''. All three stories by Simmons were later included in his 1990 collection ''Prayers to Broken Stones''. Martin's ''The Skin Trade'' was later included in '' Quartet: Four Tales from the Crossroads'' (2001) and '' Dreamsongs: A RRetrospective'' (2003). Antonio Capuano (director)
Antonio Capuano (born 9 April 1940) is an Italian film director and screenwriter. After a long apprenticeship in television as a set designer (working on, amongst other things, the television series Sheridan, squadra omicidi), Capuano debuted in the world of cinema in 1991 with the feature film Vito e gli altri, a film about the difficult life of street children in Naples, winner of the eighth Settimana Internazionale della Critica at the Venice Film Festival. Success came in 1996 with the film Pianese Nunzio, 14 anni a maggio, which tells the story of a young altar boy abused by his parish priest. Thereafter he directed other films such as Polvere di Napoli (1998) and Luna Rossa (2001), which won a golden lion nomination at the 58th Venice Film Festival. Sneakers (short Story)
"Sneakers" is a short story by American author Stephen King. It was published in the compilation book '' Dark Visions'' and in his collection ''Nightmares & Dreamscapes''. Plot summary Recording studio executive John Tell notices a pair of old dirty sneakers in an adjacent stall while using the restroom at work. He, at first, assumes that the shoes belong to a fellow employee or a delivery person. However, when he visits the bathroom again throughout the week, he notices that not only have the shoes not moved, they are now surrounded by the bodies of dead flies and other bugs. Eventually, Tell discovers that the shoes were the trademark of a dealer who supplied the local talent with cocaine, and who was killed in the bathroom stall during an apparent robbery. Tell finally confronts the man's ghost, who informs him that he was brutally killed by Jannings, Tell's boss, a drug addict who was heavily in debt to the dealer at the time. WSFA Press
The Washington Science Fiction Association (WSFA) is the oldest science fiction club in the Washington, D.C. area. It is also one of the oldest science fiction clubs, founded in 1947 by seven fans who met at that year's Worldcon in Philadelphia, the fifth Worldcon held. Since 1960 it has met on the evenings of the first and third Fridays of each month in the homes of members. All meetings are open (and along the way have included a Polish student, a Cuban author, and a Chilean physician writer). There are often informal meetings on fifth Fridays. Because there was a 5th Friday in February 1980—a 5th Friday in February occurs only every 28 years—it was decided to hold a relaxacon called DatClave. The second DatClave was held in 2008. Graphic Novel
A graphic novel is a long-form, fictional work of sequential art. The term ''graphic novel'' is often applied broadly, including fiction, non-fiction, and anthologized work, though this practice is highly contested by comic scholars and industry professionals. It is, at least in the United States, typically distinct from the term ''comic book'', which is generally used for comics periodicals and trade paperbacks (see American comic book). Fan historian Richard Kyle coined the term ''graphic novel'' in an essay in the November 1964 issue of the comics fanzine ''Capa-Alpha''. Mike Wolfer
Mike Wolfer was a comic book writer and artist. He attended The Kubert School for two years. He started his career in 1987 by forming his own publishing company, Ground Zero Comics, and self-published "Daikazu" (8 issues) and "Daikazu Vs. Gugoron" (3 issues). In 1992, Wolfer began publishing "Widow," an erotic horror title that ran a total of 14 issues, through various mini-series: "Widow: Flesh And Blood," "Widow: Kill Me Again," "Widow: Metal Gypsies" and "Widow: Bound By Blood." Simultaneously, Wolfer began freelancing with other companies such as Dark Horse Comics ("Dark Horse Presents," "Godzilla"), London Night Studios ("Razor"), Chaos! Daniel James Abraham (born November 14, 1969), pen names M. L. N. Hanover and James S. A. Corey, is an American novelist, comic book writer, screenwriter, and television producer. A comic book, also called comicbook, comic magazine or (in the United Kingdom and Ireland) simply comic, is a publication that consists of comics art in the form of sequential juxtaposed panels that represent individual scenes. Panels are often accompanied by descriptive prose and written narrative, usually, dialogue contained in word balloons emblematic of the comics art form. "Comic Cuts" was a British comic published from 1890 to 1953. It was preceded by "Ally Sloper's Half Holiday" (1884) which is notable for its use of sequential cartoons to unfold narrative. Bram Stoker Award
The Bram Stoker Award is a recognition presented annually by the Horror Writers Association (HWA) for "superior achievement" in dark fantasy and horror writing. History The Awards were established in 1987 and have been presented annually since 1988, and the winners are selected by ballot of the Active members of the HWA. They are named after Irish horror writer Bram Stoker, author of the novel ''Dracula'', among others.
