Dark Ronald (GB)
Dark Ronald (1905 – 1928) was an English bred Thoroughbred racehorse and sire with a global influence on the breeding of Thoroughbreds and sport horses, with many show jumping, show jumpers tracing back to him. Breeding The sire of Dark Ronald, Bay Ronald, was a moderate handicap racehorse and a useful sire. He produced two other notable sons: Bayardo (horse), Bayardo and Macdonald II. Bayardo went on to be one of the greatest runners of his time, and a sire of two Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, English Triple Crown winners. Macdonald II was a very successful runner in France. Bay Ronald also sired the filly Rondeau, the dam of the very significant sire Teddy (horse), Teddy (that sired, among others, Athelstan, Ortello, Sir Gallahad III, Case Ace, and Sun Teddy). His dam, Darkie, was a poor performer on the turf with only two placings, both as a two-year-old. Sir Abe Bailey
Sir Abraham Bailey, 1st Baronet (6 November 1864 – 10 August 1940), known as Abe Bailey, was a South African gold tycoon, politician, financier and cricketer. Early years Bailey's mother, Ann Drummond McEwan, was Scottish by birth while his father, Thomas Bailey, was from Yorkshire, England. Married in 1860 in South Africa, Thomas and Ann Bailey had four children, Mary, Abraham, Susannah and Alice, before Ann Bailey's premature death in 1872, when young Abe was only seven years old. Abe Bailey was sent to England to be educated, first at Keighley and later at Clewer House. After the outbreak of the Second Boer War in October 1899, a corps of imperial volunteers from London was formed in late December 1899. Nashua (April 14, 1952 – February 3, 1982) was an United States, American-born thoroughbred racehorse, best remembered for a 1955 match race against Swaps (horse), Swaps, the horse that had defeated him in the Kentucky Derby. Background Nashua's sire was the European champion Nasrullah (horse), Nasrullah. The dam was Segula, a broodmare who has had influence through her female descendants. Albrecht Wenzel Eusebius von Wallenstein () (24 September 1583 – 25 February 1634), also von Waldstein ( cs, Albrecht Václav Eusebius z Valdštejna), was a Bohemian military leader and statesman who fought on the Catholic side during the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648). His successful martial career made him one of the richest and most influential men in the Holy Roman Empire by the time of his death. Wallenstein became the supreme commander of the armies of the Imperial Army of Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II and was a major figure of the Thirty Years' War. Warmbloods are a group of middle-weight horse types and breeds primarily originating in Europe and registered with organizations that are characterized by open studbook policy, studbook selection, and the aim of breeding for equestrian sport. The term distinguishes these horses from both heavy draft horses ("cold bloods") and refined light saddle horses such as the Thoroughbred, Arabian, and Akhal-Teke ("hot bloods"). Vaucluse (horse)
Vaucluse (1912 – 1928) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and Horse breeding#Terminology, broodmare. In a brief racing career which consisted of five races in three seasons she finished second on her only start as a juvenile, fell on her three-year-old debut and then recorded her first and only victory when taking the 1000 Guineas. She ran poorly when favourite for the Oaks Stakes and finished second on her only subsequent start. After her retirement from racing she had considerable influence as a broodmare. Background Vaucluse was a bay mare bred and owned by Archibald Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery. She was trained throughout her racing career by Frank Hartigan at Weyhill in Hampshire.
