Dark Brown (1957 Film)
''Dark Brown'' is an early Australian television film, broadcast during 1957 on ABC. It was broadcast live in Melbourne, one of the first TV productions from that city. The play was later filmed again by the ABC in Brisbane in 1963. Plot In London in 1900, a young woman fears that her husband is going to murder her. She is encouraged in this belief by her mother. But all is not as it appears to be. One listing called it "a psychological drama with a suspense twist". Christopher Muir
} Christopher Muir (1931 - 2022) was an Australian director and producer, notable for his work in TV in the 1950s and 1960s. In the 1980s he was head of ABC Television drama. Biography Most of his early childhood was spent in France, but he returned to Melbourne upon the outbreak of World War II. He joined the ABC in 1949 at the recommendation of his headmaster upon completing his schooling at Melbourne Grammar School. Initially working as a messenger boy, he soon became a general trainee, and by 1954 he was a radio announcer. In 1955 the ABC seconded him to Paris to study television. He returned to Melbourne for the inauguration of ABC television in 1956. The ensuing decade saw him become a pioneer of television drama and music productions, often screened live-to-air during prime time on the ABC. ''Dark Brown'' is a 1963 Australian TV play. It was based on a British play that had been filmed by the ABC in 1957. It was the second live drama recorded at the ABC in Brisbane, after '' Vacancy in Vaughan Street''. It was shot at the ABC's studios in Toowong. Australian drama was very rare at the time, and mostly made in Sydney and Melbourne. Plot In 1880, Jenny Brown worries about the trips her tobacconist husband Arthur is making to Eastborne to visit his ailing aunt. There are also a series of unsolved murders. The aunt, Mrs Persephelous, visits Jenny. Kinescope
Kinescope , shortened to kine , also known as telerecording in Britain, is a recording of a television program on motion picture film, directly through a lens focused on the screen of a video monitor. The process was pioneered during the 1940s for the preservation, re-broadcasting and sale of television programmes before the introduction of quadruplex videotape, which from 1956 eventually superseded the use of kinescopes for all of these purposes. Kinescopes were the only practical way to preserve live television broadcasts prior to videotape. Typically, the term Kinescope can refer to the process itself, the equipment used for the procedure (a movie camera mounted in front of a video monitor, and synchronized to the monitor's scanning rate), or a film made using the process. The term originally referred to the cathode ray tube used in television receivers, as named by inventor Vladimir K. Zworykin in 1929.
