Darius Miller (railroad President)
Darius Miller (April 3, 1859 – August 24, 1914) was president of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad and Colorado and Southern Railway. Early life and family Darius Miller was born in 1859 in Princeton, Illinois, the son of John S. and Elizabeth H. Miller. He was educated in his home town; in 1882, he married Sue C. Brown of Morris, Illinois. In 1910, Miller and his wife Sue were living in Chicago. Thorndale Manor, which was designed by Howard Van Doren Shaw and built in Lake Forest, Illinois, in 1916, was originally built for Miller. The home was owned from the 1940s until 2001 by the family of Ronald P. Boardman. Railroad career Miller's railroad career began in 1877, at the age of 18, as a stenographer for the Michigan Central Railroad. Princeton is a city in and the county seat of Bureau County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,832 at the 2020 census. Princeton is part of the Ottawa Micropolitan Statistical Area. Edward Payson Ripley (October 30, 1845 – February 4, 1920), sometimes referred to as Edward P. Ripley or E. P. Ripley, was the fourteenth president of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. Youth and education Ripley was born on October 30, 1845, in Dorchester, Massachusetts. Although his family had settled in the American colonies as early as 1638, his family's most prestigious quality was that there were nine blacksmiths in his ancestry. Ripley attended public schools, entering the workforce in 1862 at a dry goods merchant's in Boston. Six years later, Ripley started his first job for a railroad as a freight agent for the Pennsylvania Railroad. Howard Elliott (December 6, 1860 – July 8, 1928) was President of Northern Pacific Railway 1903-1913, and also President of New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad beginning in 1913. Biography Elliott was born on December 6, 1860, in New York, and received a degree from Harvard University. He entered railway service during the summer of 1880, during college break as a rodman on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. After graduation from Lawrence Scientific School in 1881 with a degree in civil engineering, he became a clerk in the president's office of the St. Louis, Keokuk and Northwestern Railway.
