Dantes Tsitsi
Dantes Ingin Tsitsi (b. September 28, 1959) is a Nauruan politician. Political role Tsitsi was elected to Parliament in the 2007 general elections, gaining the seat of Godfrey Thoma and representing the constituency of Aiwo. He was re-elected in the 2008 snap elections, and then in the April 2010 election, but lost his seat in the June 2010 election, where he was the only incumbent to be defeated. Family background Tsitsi is a close relative of former parliamentarian Edwin Tsitsi, a member of the first Parliament in 1968. Nauru's politics tend to be somewhat family oriented. Edwin Tsitsi
Samuel Edwin Tsitsi (17 January 192520 May 1997) was a Nauruan politician. Biography Tsitsi was born on 17 January 1925. His father was Samuel Tsitsi. He was member of the Eamwidara tribe. In 1939, he entered the medical service as an apprentice in a pharmacy in Sydney, Australia. In 1954, again in Sydney, he trained to become a pharmacist. In December 1964, there was a by-election to fill a vacancy in the Nauruan Local Government Council caused by the death of Councillor Raymond Gadabu. In the four-way election, Tsitsi was elected. In 1966, Tsitsi was elected to the Legislative Assembly and re-elected to the Local Government Council. He represented the Aiwo district in both. In 1968, Tsitsi was elected to the first parliament of Nauru. He was nominated for Council of State, but failed election. Tsitsi was re-elected to parliament in 1971, 1973, and 1976. Parliamentary elections were held in Nauru on April 26, 2008, following the dissolving of Parliament by President Marcus Stephen on April 18. The decision came after what Stephen referred to as "months of political deadlock". Of the parliament's eighteen members, nine supported the Stephen government and nine were in opposition. Events leading to election The deadlock had been exacerbated by a crisis between the President and the Speaker of Parliament, Opposition member David Adeang. On March 22, Adeang had called a Parliamentary session, allegedly without informing government ministers, who therefore did not attend. Opposition MPs, Adeang included, constituted a majority of legislators present, and passed a ruling outlawing dual citizenship for Members of Parliament. Nauru elects on a national level a head of state (the president) and a legislature. Parliament has 19 members (increased from 18 for the 2013 election), elected for a three-year term in multi-seat constituencies. The president is elected for a three-year term by the parliament. However, there are frequent changes of government in Nauru which occur without an election; most recently, in December 2007, that of President of Nauru Marcus Stephen came to office following a Parliamentary vote of no confidence which overturned the preceding Administration of Ludwig Scotty, reelected just a few weeks previously with a landslide majority. Early parliamentary elections were held in Nauru on 2010 after the previous parliamentary election in April 2010 had resulted in a deadlock between government and opposition, tied at nine seats each.
