Danshögskolan
The School of Dance and Circus ( sv, Dans- och cirkushögskolan, DOCH) was, until 2014, a Swedish institution offering higher education in the fields of dance education, folk dance, dance, dance therapy, historical dance, choreography and contemporary circus. Since 1 January 2014 it has been a part of Stockholm University of the Arts, and the previous name is no longer used. DOCH was founded as the Institute of Choreography (Koreografiska institutet) in 1963; in 1978 it was renamed the University College of Dance, “Danshögskolan”; in 2010 it became the University of Dance and Circus, "Dans och Cirkushögskolan" (DOCH). It operated under the Ministry of Education, and was fully funded by the government and therefore had no tuition fees for Swedish and EU citizens. Kari Sylwan
Kari Sylwan (born 15 October 1940) is a Swedish actress, dancer, ballet teacher, and choreographer. Career Sylwan started as a dancer in 1956 at the Royal Swedish Ballet and at the Cullberg Ballet. At both companies she danced leading parts, for example the title roles in Birgit Cullberg's ''The Lady from the Sea'', based on Ibsen's play, and her adaptation of Strindberg's Miss Julie. Sylwan later acted in the Ingmar Bergman films ''Cries and Whispers'' and '' Face to Face''. With dancer Karin Thulin, Sylwan created the two-person company Kari och Karin ("Kari and Karin"), touring in Sweden and also appearing on television. 1996 to 2005 she was the vice-chancellor of the University College of Dance in Stockholm. Birgit Cullberg
Birgit Ragnhild Cullberg (3 August 1908 – 8 September 1999) was a Swedish choreographer. Her father Carl Cullberg was a bank director and her mother was Elna Westerström. Cullberg was born in Nyköping and was married from 1942 to 1949 to actor Anders Ek. She was the mother of Niklas Ek in 1943, and twins Mats Ek, and Malin Ek in 1945. Cullberg studied ballet under Kurt Jooss, Kurt Jooss-Leeder and Lilian Karina and at The Royal Ballet, London (1952–1957). In 1960, Cullberg was appointed director and choreographer at the Stockholm City Theatre. Some of her choreographies were premiered at the Royal Opera in Stockholm. Cullberg gained international recognition by founding the Cullberg Ballet in the 1960s. On her retirement in 1985, her son Mats Ek took over the ballet company. The Swedish Arts Grants Committee instituted the Cullberg scholarship in her honour, and she was awarded an honorary professorship at Stockholm University, where she had studied when she was young.
