Daniele Varè
Daniele Varè (12 January 1880 – 27 February 1956) was an Italian expatriate diplomat and author, most famous for the China-set novel ''The Maker of Heavenly Trousers'' (republished in 2012 by Penguin Modern Classics). He is also remembered for the ''Laughing Diplomat'' ( John Murray, 1938), his autobiography as Italian diplomat. Varè's father, Giovanni Battista Varè (Venice 1817 – Rome 1884), a lawyer, of the ''L'Indipendente'' newspaper and associate of Daniel Manin: hence as an Italian nationalist he was exiled from northern Italy by the then Austrian authorities. Later he was vice-president of the Venetian Assembly and della camera Italiana : ministero Guardasigilli del Regno (Ministri di grazia e giustizia del Regno d'Italia) in 1879. Benito Mussolini
Benito Amilcare Andrea Mussolini (; 29 July 188328 April 1945) was an Italian politician and journalist who founded and led the National Fascist Party. He was Prime Minister of Italy from the March on Rome in 1922 until his deposition in 1943, and "Duce" of Italian Fascism from the establishment of the Italian Fasces of Combat in 1919 until his execution in 1945 by Italian partisans. As dictator of Italy and principal founder of fascism, Mussolini inspired and supported the international spread of fascist movements during the inter-war period. Mussolini was originally a socialist politician and a journalist at the ''Avanti!'' newspaper. In 1912, he became a member of the National Directorate of the Italian Socialist Party (PSI), but he was expelled from the PSI for advocating military intervention in World War I, in opposition to the party's stance on neutrality. Galeazzo Ciano
Gian Galeazzo Ciano, 2nd Count of Cortellazzo and Buccari ( , ; 18 March 1903 – 11 January 1944) was an Italian diplomat and politician who served as Foreign Minister in the government of his father-in-law, Benito Mussolini, from 1936 until 1943. During this period, he was widely seen as Mussolini's most probable successor as head of government. He was the son of Admiral Costanzo Ciano, a founding member of the National Fascist Party; father and son both took part in Mussolini's March on Rome in 1922. Ciano saw action in the Italo-Ethiopian War (1935–36) and was appointed Foreign Minister on his return. Following a series of Axis defeats in the Second World War, Ciano began pushing for Italy's exit, and he was dismissed from his post as a result. He then served as ambassador to the Vatican. Giovanni Battista Varè
Giovanni Battista Varè (Venice, 12 September 1817 – Rome, 20 April 1884) was an Italian lawyer, politician and patriot. Biography Varè took part in the anti-Austrian revolt of 1848 which led with Daniele Manin to the restoration of the Republic of San Marco and was a member of the Assembly of Deputies of the short-lived new republic. After the restoration of Austrian government in Venice he fled to Switzerland where, in 1850, he became friends with Giuseppe Mazzini. The two collaborated on the newspaper ''L'Italia del Popolo''. Mazzini also made use of his legal expertise in financial transactions, commissioning him to organize an international loan to support the Italian cause. The Swiss authorities became concerned about their country's neutrality vis-a-vis the neighboring Austrian Empire, revoked Varè's asylum and expelled him with a decree of 26 February 1851.
