Daniel Watkins (canoeist)
Daniel Watkins (born 21 November 1995) is an Australian slalom canoeist who has competed at the international level since 2011. He is from Grove, Tasmania. Daniel represented Australia in the C1 event at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, after securing a quota place by winning the 2020 Oceania Canoe Slalom Championships. He qualified 2nd fastest for the final, finishing in 9th place. Early years Watkins grew up in Grove, Tasmania. He had plenty of time for recreation in this peaceful setting and started paddling in 2007 when he was 11 years of age. His technique was good and his parents decided that he should learn to canoe and paddle correctly. Watkins was enrolled in the Derwent Canoe Club beginners program. He competed in both the C1 and K1 classes. Watkins has remained with the club ever since. Canoe Slalom
Canoe slalom (previously known as whitewater slalom) is a competitive sport with the aim to navigate a decked canoe or kayak through a course of hanging downstream or upstream gates on river rapids in the fastest time possible. It is one of the two kayak and canoeing disciplines at the Summer Olympics, and is referred to by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as Canoe/Kayak Slalom. Canoeing At The 2012 Summer Olympics – Men's Slalom C-2
The men's canoe slalom C-2 competition at the 2012 Olympic Games in London took place between 30 July and 2 August at the Lee Valley White Water Centre. Twenty-eight canoeists from 12 countries competed. Great Britain's Tim Baillie and Etienne Stott won the gold medal and David Florence and Richard Hounslow won silver. Twin brothers Pavol and Peter Hochschorner of Slovakia won the bronze. Competition format In the heats, each competitor had two runs; the 10 teams with the best time qualified for the semi-finals. Each semi-final consisted of one run each and the best six qualified for the final. The final saw one run each where the team with the best time won the gold medal. 2020 Oceania Canoe Slalom Championships
The 2020 Oceania Canoe Slalom Championships took place in Auckland, New Zealand from 1 to 3 February 2020 under the auspices of International Canoe Federation (ICF). The event was hosted at Vector Wero Whitewater Park for the 3rd time. There were 128 entries from 11 nations. Olympic Qualification This event also served as the Oceanian qualification for the postponed 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. The only available quota was for the men's C1 event, after Australia and New Zealand earned quotas for the other Olympic disciplines at the 2019 World Championships in La Seu d'Urgell.
