Daniel C. Ustian was the chairman of Navistar, Inc. beginning in 2004, president and chief executive officer beginning in 2003, and a director beginning in 2002 until his release in 2012. Before serving in these positions, he was president and chief operating officer from 2002 to 2003 and president of the Engine Group of Navistar, Inc. from 1999 to 2002. In internal combustion engines, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is a nitrogen oxide () emissions reduction technique used in petrol/gasoline, diesel engines and some hydrogen engines. EGR works by recirculating a portion of an engine's exhaust gas back to the engine cylinders. The exhaust gas displaces atmospheric air and reduces in the combustion chamber. Reducing the amount of oxygen reduces the amount of fuel that can burn in the cylinder thereby reducing peak in-cylinder temperatures. The actual amount of recirculated exhaust gas varies with the engine operating parameters.
