Sir Daniel Cooper, 1st Baronet
Sir Daniel Cooper, 1st Baronet (1 July 1821 – 5 June 1902) was a nineteenth-century politician, merchant and philanthropist in the Colony of New South Wales. He served as the first speaker of the Legislative Assembly of the colony and was a noted philatelist. Cooper was conferred the hereditary title of Cooper baronet of Woollahra in 1863, the second of four baronetcy conferred to British expatriates in the Australian colonies. Early life He was born at Bolton, Lancashire, England, the son of Thomas Cooper, merchant, and his wife Jane Ramsden. He was the nephew of the emancipated convict and extraordinarily successful businessman, Daniel Cooper, who took an interest in the education of his nephew. He was taken to Sydney by his parents when a child, but was sent back to Britain again in 1835 and spent four years at University College London. Dan Cooper (born April 28, 1946) is a media entrepreneur, author and founder of 4 LLC, a New York media content development company. He was a key figure in creating the original operational plan for the Fox News Channel and was a senior member of the original ''20/20'' staff. He is also the author of two books, ''Naked Launch'' and ''The Making of The Thorn Birds'', a story of the making of the 1983 ABC-broadcast miniseries, The Thorn Birds. The Wake are a British post-punk, synth-pop and later indie pop band, formed in Glasgow in 1981 by Gerard "Caesar" McInulty (formerly of Altered Images), Steven Allen (drums) and Joe Donnelly (bass), the latter replaced by Bobby Gillespie. Steven's sister Carolyn Allen also joined on keyboards, and remained in the band thereafter. Gillespie left the band in 1983, replaced by Martin Cunning and then by Alexander 'Mac' Macpherson. History The Wake released their first single on their own Scan 45 label, coupling together "On Our Honeymoon" and "Give Up". Daniel Cooper (1785 – 3 November 1853) was a convict transported to New South Wales who became a successful merchant, financier, shipowner and shipping agent. Transported in 1815, he received a conditional pardon in 1818 and an absolute pardon in 1821. He married in 1819, to convict Hannah Dodd. His first business interests were a general store, an adjoining inn, a small investment in shipping, and a brewery. His fortune developed when he became a partner in the firm of Hutchinson, Terry and Co., (also known as the Waterloo Co.) and in 1825 he and Solomon Levey became the sole owners of the firm, which became generally known as Cooper and Levey. The firm continued to have spectacular success, expanding into importing a full range of goods, pioneering the export of Australian wool, and investing in whaling and sealing expeditions. ''Dan Cooper'' (also known as ''Les Aventures de Dan Cooper'') is a Franco-Belgian comics series about a fictional Canadian military flying ace and rocketship pilot. The comics series was conceived in 1954 as ''Tintin'' magazine's answer to the Buck Danny series published in the rival '' Spirou'' magazine. It was written and drawn by the Belgian Albert Weinberg (1922–2011); however, a handful of the stories were written by Jean-Michel Charlier instead. As per the Franco-Belgian comics tradition, after being serialized in a weekly comic book magazine, each completed storyline would appear as a published album. Daniel Cooper (murderer)
Daniel Richard Cooper (1881 – 1923) of New Zealand was a convicted baby farmer and illegal abortionist. In 1922, he was apprehended at a Wellington suburban property and in 1923 found guilty of murder and executed. His wife, Martha Elizabeth Cooper, was acquitted. Early life Daniel Cooper was born to Elizabeth Ure and George Cooper, in Burns, Otago on 18 October 1881. Later in life, he became a builder, Cooper had two periods of contact with the police involving theft, once in Oamaru in 1902, and again in Palmerston North in 1907. By 1907, he had settled in Awamangu, Otago and married Marion Burns. The couple were itinerant and shifted to New Plymouth and then Gore, Southland, in 1916. By then, Cooper had joined the Seventh-day Adventist Church and sold a booklet entitled ''The Practical Guide to Good Health.''
