Daniel Chalifour
Daniel Chalifour (born 9 December 1971) is a Canadian Paralympic cyclist who competed at international elite competitions. He was a four-time Parapan American Games champion and a World bronze medalist. Paralympic Cycling
Para-cycling (or Paracycling) is the sport of cycling adapted for cyclists who have various disabilities. It is governed by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI). The sport consists of seven different events which include road and track races. The world's elite para-cyclists compete at Track and Road Worlds Championships (since 1994), the Commonwealth Games, the Paralympic Games and the World Cup (since 2010). History Para-cycling originated in the 1980s, starting with visually impaired riders who competed on a tandem with a sighted partner. Stargardt's Disease
Stargardt disease is the most common inherited single-gene retinal disease. In terms of the first description of the disease, it follows an autosomal recessive inheritance pattern, which has been later linked to bi-allelic ABCA4 gene variants (STGD1). However, there are Stargardt-like diseases with mimicking phenotypes that are referred to as STGD3 and STGD4, and have a autosomal dominant inheritance due to defects with ELOVL4 or PROM1 genes, respectively. It is characterized by macular degeneration that begins in childhood, adolescence or adulthood, resulting in progressive loss of vision. Signs and symptoms The presentation usually occurs in childhood or adolescence, though there is no upper age limit for presentation and late-onset is possible.
