Dangler (plot Device)
Dangler is a literary term meaning a plotline that is metaphorically left to "dangle" or "hang". A ''dangler'', or ''dangling plotline'', is a plot device in fiction where a plotline is forgotten, phased out and eventually dropped, thus a resolution is never achieved. Although dangling plotlines can occur in all forms of media, they typically appear in comic books, movies and book sequels, where the original writer or creative team can be replaced. Reasons for danglers Typically, a writer will pepper the main story with smaller back-stories. It then becomes evident to the reader that these smaller back-stories have the potential to build up into a bigger story and reach a conclusion of some sort. Editorial mandate can also force a writer to drop a building plotline due to fan backlash or an editor's lack of interest to pursue such a plot. Dangle (espionage)
Dangle (''podstava'' in Russian intelligence jargon and ''chèvre'' in French police and intelligence jargon''Jargon Policier (Police Française)'', Sébastien Burneauavailable online on Knol.) is a term used in intelligence work to refer to an agent or officer of one intelligence agency or group who pretends to be interested in defecting or ''turning'' to another intelligence agency or group. The goal of a dangle is to convince the second or foreign intelligence agency that they have changed loyalties by offering to act as a double agent. The dangle then feeds information to their original agency and/or gives disinformation to the second or foreign intelligence agency. Earring
An earring is a piece of jewelry attached to the ear via a piercing in the earlobe or another external part of the ear (except in the case of clip earrings, which clip onto the lobe). Earrings have been worn by people in different civilizations and historic periods, often with cultural significance. Deke (ice Hockey)
In ice hockey, a deke is a type of feint or fake technique whereby a player draws an opposing player out of position or skates by the opponent while maintaining possession and control of the puck. The term is a Canadianism formed by abbreviating the word ''decoy''. The position of the player performing the deke and the defender determines where the puck will be moved and the speed. The deke can be used to move the puck out of reach of an opposing player, move the puck past the opposing player, or quickly change direction of the puck so the opposing player is caught out of position. Dekes are usually used in combination with either a change of direction or speed, or both; the deke may refer to the entire sequence of actions as well as the maneuver(s) made with the stick. Often a change in direction or a change in speed is enough to get past an opposing player, but dekes are used in combination with these to better protect the puck and get by a defender. Lacrosse
Lacrosse is a team sport played with a lacrosse stick and a lacrosse ball. It is the oldest organized sport in North America, with its origins with the indigenous people of North America as early as the 12th century. The game was extensively modified by European colonists, reducing the violence, to create its current collegiate and professional form. Players use the head of the lacrosse stick to carry, pass, catch, and shoot the ball into the goal. The sport has four versions that have different sticks, fields, rules and equipment: field lacrosse, women's lacrosse, box lacrosse and intercrosse. The men's games, field lacrosse (outdoor) and box lacrosse (indoor), are contact sports and all players wear protective gear: helmet, gloves, shoulder pads, and elbow pads. Lloyd Dangle
Lloyd Dangle (born May 13, 1961) is an American writer and cartoonist, illustrator, and political satirist. Biography Early life and career Lloyd Dangle graduated from Ann Arbor Huron High School in 1979, and attended the University of Michigan School of Art, graduating with a BFA in 1983. He was editor and contributor to the U of M's ''Gargoyle'' humor magazine. Dangle worked as a designer, paste-up artist, and cartoonist for the '' Michigan Voice'', an alternative newspaper in Flint, Michigan, that was founded and edited by future filmmaker Michael Moore; he served as a sound recordist on Moore's first movie, '' Roger and Me''. After leaving Michigan in 1983 he moved to New York City and worked for magazines and newspapers including ''Elle'', ''Manhattan'', '' Inc.'', '' Nuclear Times'', and the ''Village Voice'' as a production artist. Dangling Modifier
A dangling modifier (also known as a dangling participle or illogical participle) is a type of ambiguous grammatical construct whereby a grammatical modifier could be misinterpreted as being associated with a word other than the one intended. A dangling modifier has no subject and is usually a participle. A writer may use a dangling modifier intending to modify a subject while word order may imply that the modifier describes an object, or vice versa. An example of a dangling modifier appears in the sentence "Turning the corner, a handsome school building appeared." The modifying clause ''Turning the corner'' describes the behavior of the narrator, but the narrator is only implicit in the sentence. The sentence could be misread as the ''turning'' action attaching either to the ''handsome school building'' or to nothing at all.
