Dandaleith railway station served the village of Craigellachie, Moray, Scotland from 1858 to 1965 on the Morayshire Railway. History The station opened as Craigellachie on 23 December 1858 by the Great North of Scotland Railway The Great North of Scotland Railway (GNSR) was one of the two smallest of the five major Scottish railway companies prior to the 1923 Grouping, operating in the north-east of the country. The station's name was changed to Dandaleith in 1864 to avoid confusion with the Craigellachie station that opened to the south a year before. It was downgraded to an unstaffed halt in 1931, although it became staffed after 7 June 1953. Craigellachie, Moray
Craigellachie ( gd, Creag Eileachaidh) is a small village in Moray, Scotland, at the confluence of the River Spey and River Fiddich (whose valley or glen gives its name to the famous Scotch whisky Glenfiddich), in walking distance of the town of Aberlour. The name means "Rock of Alarm" and was first applied to the cliff on which much of the village is sited, above the River Spey. Craigellachie dates back to at least 1750, when there was a ferry across the Spey where today's village now stands. It also stands at the intersection of the A95 from Keith to Aberlour and the A941 from Rothes to Dufftown. Craigellachie has two malt whisky distilleries ( Craigellachie and The Macallan) and is home to the Speyside Cooperage. Craigellachie Bridge over the River Spey was built by Thomas Telford between 1812 and 1815. Morayshire Railway
The Morayshire Railway was the first railway to be built north of Aberdeen, Scotland. It received royal assent in 1846 but construction was delayed until 1851 because of the adverse economic conditions existing in the United Kingdom. The railway was built in two phases with the section from Elgin to Lossiemouth completed in 1852. When the Inverness and Aberdeen Junction Railway (I&AJR) reached Keith via Elgin, the Morayshire was able to complete the Speyside second phase by connecting the Craigellachie line at Orton. Initially, the Morayshire ran its own locomotives on the I&AJR track between Elgin and Orton but this was short-lived and the Morayshire carriages were then hauled to Orton by the I&AJR.
