Founded in 1985 by former ballerina Joysanne Sidimus, the Dancer Transition Resource Centre (DTRC) is a Canadian charity that provides counselling and retraining grants to dancers making career transitions. Joysanne Sidimus is a Canadian ballet dancer and founder of the Dancer Transition Resource Centre and the Artists’ Health Centre of Toronto Western Hospital. She served as ballet mistress for the Ballet Repertory Company and Grands Ballets de Genève. Career She is a member of the artistic staff of the National Ballet of Canada as guest répétiteur for more than 30 years. She has taught at American Ballet Theatre, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Canada's National Ballet School, L’École supérieure de ballet du Québec, Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, and North Carolina School of the Arts. Karen Kain
Karen Alexandria Kain (born March 28, 1951) is a Canadian former ballet dancer, and was the artistic director of the National Ballet of Canada from 2005 - 2021. Early training and childhood Kain's mother enrolled her daughter in ballet training because she believed it would improve her postural alignment, poise, and discipline. The family moved from Ancaster to Erindale Woodlands, Toronto Township when Kain was in grade 6 (age 11, 1962) so she could begin training at the National Ballet School of Canada. (The majority of Toronto Township, including Erindale Woodlands, is now Mississauga.) Upon graduating in 1969, she was invited to join the National Ballet of Canada. Career Transition For Dancers is a nonprofit organization with offices in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago that helps dancers establish new careers when they have retired from their performing careers. Founded in 1985, the organization has 4,600 active dancer-clients and has helped dancers in 47 states with their transitions through mobile National Outreach Projects. History In 1982, several foundations and unions including the National Endowment for the Arts, the AFL-CIO Labor Institute for Human Enrichment, and the Actors' Equity Association (led by Agnes de Mille) granted funding for a conference to discuss the need to assist dancers both during and at the end of their careers.
