Dance Mission Theater
Dance Mission Theater is a nonprofit performance venue and dance school located in the Mission District of San Francisco, California. The theatre is operated by Dance Brigade, a female dance troupe with a focus on social change. The theatre, known for its dance classes and performance art, has been ranked one of the best dance studios in San Francisco, offering around 50 classes and hosting roughly 1,500 students a week. The theatre offers approximately 48 weeks of programming per year. The theatre has been located in its current space since 1998. In December 2014, the theatre announced that it might have to relocate after its landlord increased the theatre's rent. The theatre applied for assistance from the city Government of San Francisco. As of late 2019, the organization planned to move, with two other local non-profits, to a new building at 18th and Mission. The Mission District (Spanish: ''Distrito de la Misión''), commonly known as The Mission (Spanish: ''La Misión''), is a neighborhood in San Francisco, California. The book features portraits of DJ Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa, Chuck D, and Ice Cube, among others, and is based on numerous interviews with graffiti artists, gang members, DJs, rappers, and hip hop activists. Jeff Chang is an American historian, journalist, and music critic on hip hop music and culture. His 2005 book, '' Can't Stop Won't Stop'', which won the Before Columbus Foundation's American Book Award, chronicles the early hip hop scene. His writing has appeared in ''URB'', ''BOMB'', ''San Francisco Chronicle'', ''The Village Voice'', ''San Francisco Bay Guardian'', ''Vibe'', ''Spin'', ''The Nation'', and ''Mother Jones''. He has also been featured on NPR. Chang was the executive director of the Institute for Diversity in the Arts + Committee on Black Performing Arts at Stanford University. California is rich in dance history. In classical ballet, California is home to the oldest professional ballet company in the United States. The San Francisco Ballet, founded as the San Francisco Opera Ballet in 1933, predates both American Ballet Theater and New York City ballet.
