Dan Tobin
Daniel Malloy Tobin (October 19, 1910 – November 26, 1982) was an American supporting actor on the stage, in films and on television. He generally played gentle, urbane, rather fussy, sometimes obsequious and shifty characters, often with a concealed edge of malice. Early years Tobin was a native of Cincinnati, and he attended the University of Cincinnati. Career Tobin acted with a touring troupe in England. After an impresario saw him in ''Ah, Wilderness!'', he gained a role in ''Behind Your Back'' at the Strand. '' Tobin's most memorable roles were as the overbearing secretary, Gerald, in ''Woman of the Year'' (1942), and the top-billed scientist in Orson Welles's innovative Peabody Award-winning unsold television pilot, ''The Fountain of Youth'', filmed in 1956 and televised once two years later as an installment of NBC's ''Colgate Theatre''. Four Star Playhouse
''Four Star Playhouse'' is an American anthology series that ran from 1952 to 1956. Four Star Playhouse was owned by Four Star International. Its episodes ranged anywhere from surreal mysteries, such as "The Man on the Train", to light comedies, such as "The Lost Silk Hat". The original premise was that Charles Boyer, Ida Lupino, David Niven, and Dick Powell would take turns starring in episodes. However, several other performers took the lead from time to time, including Ronald Colman and Joan Fontaine. The show was sponsored in its first bi-weekly season by The Singer Company. Bristol-Myers became an alternate sponsor when it became a weekly series in the fall of 1953 (both sponsors' names alternated as part of the show's title in its initial broadcasts). ''The First Hundred Years'' is the first ongoing TV soap opera in the United States that began as a daytime serial, airing on CBS from December 4, 1950 until June 27, 1952. A previous daytime drama on NBC, ''These Are My Children'', aired in 1949 but only lasted one month, and NBC's ''Hawkins Falls'' began in June 1950 as a primetime "soap" and didn't move to daytime until April 1951. The show began with the wedding of Chris Thayer and Connie Martin, which lasted for the first week of episodes. The couple settled down in a huge, unkept white elephant mansion, a present from Connie's father. The series did not succeed due to very low viewership, as few American households had television sets, and fewer still watched during the afternoon.
