Electoral Division Of Nhulunbuy
Nhulunbuy was an electoral divisions of the Northern Territory, electoral division of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly, Legislative Assembly in Australia's Northern Territory. It was first created in 1974, and is named after the remote Nhulunbuy, Northern Territory, town of the same name. Nhulunbuy is a rural electorate on the Territory's northeast coast, covering and taking in the towns of Nhulunbuy, Galiwinku, Northern Territory, Galiwinku, Yirrkala, Northern Territory, Yirrkala and Gapuwiyak, Northern Territory, Gapuwiyak. There were 5,895 people enrolled in the electorate as of August 2016. The division was abolished in 2020, and replaced by the Electoral division of Mulka, division of Mulka. Nhulunbuy was traditionally a safe seat for the Australian Labor Party (Northern Territory Branch), Labor Party, which held the seat without a break from 1980 to 2016. The Australian Labor Party (Northern Territory Branch), commonly known as Territory Labor, is the Northern Territory branch of the Australian Labor Party. It has been the governing party of the Northern Territory since winning the 2016 election under Michael Gunner. It previously held office from 2001 to 2012. History The first Labor candidate from the Northern Territory—which was then represented by the Northern Territory seat in the South Australian House of Assembly—was Pine Creek miner and former City of Adelaide alderman James Robertson in 1905. The first Labor MP was Thomas Crush, who was elected at a 1908 by-election and accepted into the South Australian Labor caucus despite not having signed the Labor pledge. He was re-elected in 1910, and served until the Northern Territory formally separated from South Australia in 1911, resulting in the loss of the seat in state parliament. Northern Territory Legislative Assembly
The Legislative Assembly of the Northern Territory is the unicameral legislature of the Northern Territory of Australia. The Legislative Assembly has 25 members, each elected in single-member electorates for four-year terms. The voting method for the Assembly is the full-preferential voting system, having previously been optional preferential voting. Elections are on the fourth Saturday in August of the fourth year after the previous election, but can be earlier in the event of a no confidence vote in the Government. The most recent election for the Legislative Assembly was the 2020 election held on 22 August 2020. The next election is scheduled for 24 August 2024. Syd Stirling
Sydney James Stirling (born 16 December 1951) is a former Australian politician. He was the Labor member for Nhulunbuy in the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly from 1990 to 2008. Stirling was born in Kyneton, Victoria, and worked as a teacher before his election to parliament. He challenged for the Labor leadership twice, but was easily defeated. In 1999 he was elected Deputy Leader to Clare Martin, and served as Deputy Chief Minister following the ALP's election win in 2001. He resigned along with Martin in November 2007, and retired at the 2008 election. He is currently the president of the Northern Territory division of the Labor Party.
