Dan Kalman
Daniel "Dan" Simon Kalman (born March 21, 1952 in Oakland, California) is an American mathematician and winner of nine awards for expository writing in mathematics. (Several article titles have links to online pdf's.) Education and career After graduating from Oakland High School (Oakland, California), Oakland High School in 1970, Kalman matriculated at Harvey Mudd College, where he graduated in 1974. From 1974 to 1980 he was a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he received his PhD in 1980. He was from 1978 to 1979 an instructor at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, and from 1979 to 1983 an assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay. After teaching as a visiting lecturer from 1983 to 1985 at Augustana University, Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Kalman worked from 1985 to 1993 as a member of the technical staff of The Aerospace Corporation in Los Angeles. Kalman Filter
For statistics and control theory, Kalman filtering, also known as linear quadratic estimation (LQE), is an algorithm that uses a series of measurements observed over time, including statistical noise and other inaccuracies, and produces estimates of unknown variables that tend to be more accurate than those based on a single measurement alone, by estimating a joint probability distribution over the variables for each timeframe. The filter is named after Rudolf E. Kálmán, who was one of the primary developers of its theory. This digital filter is sometimes termed the ''Stratonovich–Kalman–Bucy filter'' because it is a special case of a more general, nonlinear filter developed somewhat earlier by the Soviet mathematician Ruslan Stratonovich. Shahriar Shahriari
Shahriar Shahriari (born May 30, 1956) is an American mathematician. He is the William Polk Russell Professor of Mathematics at Pomona College. Early life and education Shahriari was born on May 30, 1956, in Tehran, Iran, to Parviz and Zomorod Shahriari. He attended Oberlin College, graduating in 1977, and subsequently received his doctorate from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1986. Career Shahriari began teaching at Pomona College in 1989. In 2006, he published a calculus textbook titled ''Approximately Calculus''. Recognition In 1998, Shahriari shared the Carl B. Charles (Chuck) William Groetsch (born February 15, 1945, in New Orleans) is an American applied mathematician and numerical analyst. Education and career Groetsch graduated from the University of New Orleans with B.S. in 1966 and M.S. in 1968. He was from 1966 to 1968 an engineer and applied mathematician in Boeing's Space Division, Launch Systems Branch. In 1971 he received his PhD in mathematics from Louisiana State University in 1971. At the University of Cincinnati he was an assistant professor from 1971 to 1975, an associate professor from 1976 to 1981, and a full professor from 1981 to 2006. There he was head of the department of mathematical sciences from 1985 to 1990. At The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, he was the founding dean of the School of Science and Mathematics from 2006 to 2011 and is the Citadel Distinguished Professor of Mathematical Science since 2011.
