Dan Hughes (Nebraska Politician)
Dan Hughes (born June 5, 1956) is an American politician from the state of Nebraska in the Midwestern United States. In 2014, he was elected to the Nebraska Legislature, representing a district in the southwestern part of the state. Hughes is a member of the Republican Party. Early life and career Hughes was born on June 5, 1956, in Imperial, Nebraska, to a family of farmers. He graduated from high school in Venango, Nebraska, in 1974. In 1976, he received an associate degree in agriculture from Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colorado. In 1977, he married Josie Hahn; the couple eventually produced two children. After receiving his degree, Hughes joined his family's wheat-farming operation in southwestern Nebraska. As of 2011, they farmed about . The Nebraska Legislature (also called the Unicameral) is the legislature of the U.S. state of Nebraska. The Legislature meets at the Nebraska State Capitol in Lincoln. The Nebraska Panhandle is an area in the western part of the state of Nebraska and one of several U.S. state panhandles, or elongated geographical regions that extend from their main political entity. The ''McCook Daily Gazette'' is a newspaper published in the city of McCook, in the southwestern part of the state of Nebraska, in the Great Plains region of the United States. It serves southwestern Nebraska and northwestern Kansas. The newspaper is issued five days a week, Monday through Friday afternoons. As of 2011, it had a circulation of 4,564. The paper was founded in 1911 by Harry D. Strunk and Burris H. Stewart as the ''Red Willow Gazette''. Thirteen years later, under Strunk's editorship, it became a daily and changed its name to the ''McCook Daily Gazette''. In 1929, the newspaper became one of the first in the world to be delivered regularly by air: for several months its airplane, the ''Newsboy'', flew a daily route, dropping bundles of newspapers to carriers in outlying towns. Alma is a city in Harlan County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,133 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Harlan County. History Alma was founded in the spring of 1871 by a group of Union Pacific railroad laborers originally from Cheyenne, Wyoming. Harlan County was created by the Nebraska Legislature on June 3, 1871, and Alma was made the county seat on July 3, 1871. A dispute among the original settlers led to a dissolution of the town, but it was re-organized in 1874. Alma's status as county seat was challenged by residents of Orleans, but an 1884 Nebraska Supreme Court decision affirmed Alma's status as seat of Harlan County.
