Dalton, Kansas
Dalton is an unincorporated community in Avon Township, Sumner County, Kansas, United States. It is located about half way between Wellington and Oxford at the intersection of S Oliver Rd and E 15th St S, next to an abandoned railroad. History Dalton was a station on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway that previously passed through the community, east to west, from Oxford to Wellington. A post office was opened in Dalton in 1885, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1939. Atchison, Topeka And Santa Fe Railway
The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway , often referred to as the Santa Fe or AT&SF, was one of the larger railroads in the United States. The railroad was chartered in February 1859 to serve the cities of Atchison, Kansas, Atchison and Topeka, Kansas, and Santa Fe, New Mexico. The railroad reached the Kansas–Colorado border in 1873 and Pueblo, Colorado, in 1876. To create a demand for its services, the railroad set up real estate offices and sold farmland from the land grants that it was awarded by United States Congress, Congress. Despite being chartered to serve the city, the railroad chose to bypass Santa Fe, due to the engineering challenges of the mountainous terrain. Oxford is a city in Sumner County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 1,048. History Oxford was founded in 1871 at the site of a former trading post. Oxford was incorporated as a city on October 17, 1879. It was named after Oxford University, in England. Area code 620 covers telephone exchanges in most of southern Kansas. It was created as the result of a split from 316 on February 3, 2001. The area code stretches across the southern half of the state, from the Colorado border in the west to the Missouri border in the east. It completely surrounds 316, which now only serves Wichita and its inner suburbs, making it one of the six pairs of "doughnut area codes" in the numbering plan. Permissive dialing of 316 across southern Kansas continued until November 3, 2001.
